has to be manufactured before dec 31, 1998. mine was made in mar 1999. i really can't complain though it has worked well and has made alot of copies over the years. heck it still works fine although it is slow in todays standard. of couse i don't sit and watch it anyway.

For those of you who don't know, the Memorex CR-1622 was manufactured by Philips Electronics and was also sold by HP as the model 4020i. Class participants settled their case against HP & Philips last year and owners of the HP verison of the drive got their choice of a new Philips 12X CD-RW drive or a $200 rebate towards the purchase of any Philips product(s). It look like the participants in the Memorex class action got screwed. By the time you get your $50 in ths settlement, you will be able to buy a 40X DVD recorder with 1000 blank pieces of media with your $50.

sweet post!! i sold this drive to my brother's good friend like 2-3 years ago when i got a new yamaha 8x scsi. but i know for a fact he still has it, and i still have the docs!!

i just called the 800# you posted and the woman was like "we were just notified about this in the last hour, please give me a minute to read the docs i was given"... haha. I had to sit and wait for her to get up-to-date on this stuff, I knew more than their own Customer Support people do! =D

AT effect baby!!

We have one of these bad boys at work. Sweet, time to score a deal on a 24X. I blow off people at work to use the old 2x dog for their music and crap otherwise they would be using my 12x all the time. the 40 minute burn gets old quick and they stop asking.

On the $50 side of this settlement. The Drive manufacture date won't matter as long as you check the box that states you have disposed of the drive. Therefore you can't check the manufacture date.

My only question is how can they prevent someone from getting on both deals? all they have to do is give their manuels or whatever to his friend and voila $50 and a CDRW.

I'll sell you mine packaging for $20 j/k

Thanks for post.

It barely worked before, then after upgrading to Windows XP, it didn't work at all. Contacted Memorex and they said that they didn't support it, but I could try upgrading to the new version of NTI CD-Maker. Sure I can spend some more cash in hopes my 1622 will kind of work, NOT.

I thought this drive was based on a Wearnes mechanism? 2x2x6, right? I think that's the drive I had and passed on to a friend..

I owned one for 2 years and never burned a coaster. My brother-in-law uses it now and he's never burned a coaster either. I won't be getting the $50, it just wouldn't feel right.

I read the claim form but it has no provisions for those that may have bought more than one unit (yes, I have receipts). It seems the lawyers were too busy thinking of that fat $750,000 commission they are going to gobble up.

<< Claim form says proof of purchase may be one or more of the following: Sales receipt, credit card billing statement, product package , product manual or inserts. >>

1. "One or more"??? Why more?

2. So if someone has the sale receipt, a credit card billing statement, the product packages including product manuals and some inserts, he could get $200 (4 x $50)?

Hmm.

I definitely don't have any of the packaging. I'm thinking about just peeling the label off the top of the drive...says it was manufactured Dec of 1997 so it'll probably earn me a check.

drive doesn't work in XP for me either, hope they don't try to get out of paying me.

69StingRay--

and, my Dad thanks you very much. At the time, we thought it was all he would ever need......for a Father's Day present. Hehe....now he's got 4 burners.

Gotta have my sister grab the manuals I gave her, (installe dit in her comp as a reader because her CDROM died)

Not sure I think I had the 2X2X24 so I don't think it's an eligble model. I am going to have her check the model number and serial number.

I tossed that POS as soon as I got my $99 12x Iomega 3840 burner from CompUSA in Jan'01. Back then, that was a sweet deal ! My coaster percentages went from 50% to zero Guess I am gonna miss out on my $50 ....

Just noticed this post - thanks very much for the heads up!

Don't think I still have the docs, but certainly have the drive. Think I might go for the replacement drive - I'll about guarantee that it's a 12X or better.

I had one of these POS 622's back in the late 90's, and it has long since been in the trash where it belonged. Replaced with a sony that worked great up until about a year ago and I replaced it with another POS HP. I will only go sony or acer with my next drive, lesson learned. Does anyone have extra manuals or inserts? It would be worth it to me to recoup some of the money I spent on that thing even if I had to pay postage for someone to send me "proof".

Hahahahaha, back in the Hot Dealz Day I got four of these from Office Depot for $50 apiece! I slid two to friends at cost and literally gave the other two away -- now to find out if any of these folks still have the drives or packaging! :Q

woohoo, started cleaning my room up and (by pure coincidence) found the receipt for this dated 4/14/98 @ $250 from CompUSA...that was one crappy drive too. I still haven't learned my lesson about buying technology early (i'd be pissed at myself if DVD-R drives can be had for like $70-$80 within the next few months, though that's almost impossible...hopefully).

thanks for the post.
