I just got a heads up from the President of the Ski and Snowboard club at my school that a new boarding brand is breaking out - BUILT snowboards. The boards are manufactured by Vertek, who has been making boards for 11 years and apparently manufactures boards under other brands. Built is trying to get their brand name out on the slopes so they're offering some KILLER deals on some nice looking boards to college students. The following schools are participating, so contact your ski and snowboard clubs to jump in on the deal

-Cornell University
-Harvard
-Colorado State University
-Colorado University
-Boulder
-CSU
-Long Beach
-CSU
-Monterey Bay
-MIT
-UCLA
-University of Idaho
-University of Oregon
-University of Pennsylvania

Now, if you don't go to one of these schools (or you don't go to school at all) you can use the following code (minus the quotations): "team-cornell"
Mods, before locking this thread, please read the quote from Glenn Cogan, Built's President and CEO announced at a Press Release;

<< "Not only do the club members themselves get a great deal on killer equipment," said Cogan, "but they can then turn around and pass these deal codes on to other students, family and friends so the people close to them can also save money. We could have embarked on a massive print ad campaign, but nothing's better than getting boards on the mountain..." >>

Now, for the boards....

I just went to the site and all the following worked:
"team-harvard"
"team-mit"
"team-csu"
"team-boulder"
"team-ucla"
"team-idaho"
"team-monterey"

If you go to these schools, these should work. But if you don't, I'm sure "team-cornell" will work just fine .

There really isn't a good "beginner board." What you're probably looking for is a freeride board that will handle your weight and ends up (generally) between your chin and your nose, altough most advanced boarders seem to agree that your weight in relation to the stiffness of the board is more important, as well as your riding style - tricks, speed, etc.... But for starters, the above guidelines usually suffice. Another criterium for a good "beginner board" is a good PRICE! So, with what I've mentioned so far, I'm sure you can make a decision. Try http://www.snowboarding.com for more info.

Anyone ever ride one of these? I am very interested, since I am out to buy a board anyway, but I don't want to end up with a P.O.S. board and out $250 bucks. I'm sure a lot of people are the same way.

Yah, that's a good point. I don't know how they ride, because my board is on its way actually. I did have a really good experience with the CSR. I'm leaving home this Sunday, so if the board doesn't get here by Friday, there won't be anyone to pick it up. I explained this to the CSR, and she told me that she would pick up the costs of overnight shipping if need be, to get me my board by Friday (And from California to NY, we're not talking about just a few bucks here). So, a good experience thus far.
The boards do have a 2-year warranty on em, but I really don't know what the warranty covers. You might want to call and find out. For some info on their manufacturing process, check out http://www.vertekmfg.com

I cant find any user reviews of the built or vertek company on the net... All i find is more info about this deal. I can't even find out what these are made out of Anyone want to help find some decent info about these boards besides sizing info?

EDIT: Also, if anyone gets theirs, can you either post on here your reaction to it, or pm me telling me how good it is? Thx.

Check out here and here for the some info....
Looks like there's five layers: Deck, Deck Glass (Structural Fiberglass), Core, Foil, and Base. They use epoxy resin to lock the layers together. The picture looks as if the core is made out of wood (which is what most companies use as their core), but this site describes Built Snowboards as a "Manufacturer of lightweight carbon fiber and kevlar/carbon fiber snowboards" which would be pretty sweet.....I think - any snowboarding gurus out there want to clarify this???
I just called to find out what that actual deal was, but they are closed. I'm gonna call tomorrow around 12 or 1 to get the tracking number on my board. I should be getting it sometime this week, but I won't get to riding it until mid January. If you want, I can give you an update then. When I call tomorrow I'll also ask to speak to someone that'll clarify the production process.....

update: this site has the following description:

<< All snowboards in this line are 360 cap, 360 Rockwell steel edge, full wood core (Poplar / Birch), with sublimated PBT top decks and sintered bases for a smokin lightweight, high performance rides. Flex patterns vary slightly between deck sizes but are typically on the upper end of a medium flex pattern to suit most any rider's needs; freestyle, freeride, or carving. >>

The prices here are alot cheaper than on Built's page, but still not cheaper than with the 50% off straight from Built themselves. I wonder if the $350 retail they have on their site is just b.s.
hmmmmm........

ATTENTION::: SOMEONE WHO KNOWS SOMETHIGN ABOUT BOARDS.....

I currently own a "Vortex" board...got it at a thrif shop in Vail for $20..never boarded in my life, but though for $20 I can at least have someone pull me around a parking lot over some jumps and maybe make our own "JACKASS" video

But my question is....Is Vortex a good board, and I guess it has what you would call the "plastic rachet bindings with the heel stabilizer"

This winter I plan on going boarding about 3 times...and buying a board seems more logical than renting one 3 differnt times for 4 days a pop...

So now, should I buy 1) just boots, 2) boots and bindings or 3) a whole new set-up?

also, here is a link for some boots and bindins....these bindings look like a style I would like to use, easy in and out....
Boots and Bindings

THANKS!!!!!

bump

looking to get some info on this from the snowboarders on Anandtech. I am looking to get a setup for my kid - he is 17 and somewhat of a beginner.

If someone can shed some light on this deal and the quality of the boards - it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi folks,

I work at Burton Snowboards (as a web developer), and have been riding for 15 years. As far as these "budget" boards go I would reccomend against them. If you are interested in finding a quality board get a burton from last year. Almost every dealer will markdown the left over boards at 40%. You can also grab some good boards off ebay. If anybody wants some more info head over to the burton web site and check out our "developer" section, or send me a PM

<< are these really considered "budget" boards? >>

that's exactly what i was thinking.....if $350 is for 'budget' boards, then i think i'll stick to it
i think he didn't see that it was just that there's a deal here.....built does call themselves "pro-quality"....we'll see
ygpm BurtonSpeedy, but can you post my message and your reply up on the thread, i'm pretty sure people are interested in what you have to say, thx!

Anybody get their board yet? Within the next week or so I will be ordering a board. I got a few more expensive ones in mind, but I still want to know the quality of this board before i order elsewhere, because this would be a smoking deal. Also, how are the bindings? anyone? anyone? bueller? Also bump for those who might not have seen it.
