The 1700 or 1700n laser is very tempting at half-price....

does anyone know if they emulate PCL 4,5 or 6? the lower end p1500 laser has pcl6 in the specs, but
nothing mentioned in the 1700/1700n.

edit: eh! problem with the coupon.... will hunt around, but looks like no deal for me

edit #2: my bad... coupon only good for "select" printers -- the 1700/1700n isn't one of them
but the p1500 is -- so does anyone have experience with the p1500?

Anyone know of a better deal than $100 for a dell p1500 laser ?

(the 50% off works on warranty, but not toner -- so for $25 more than an extra toner, I may just get an extra printer! -- and have a spare for when it dies)

This is an indication that Dell may be leaving the printer business - frankly I like Dell Pcs but I have not come across any one of their printers that I find acceptable. I ordered one myself - a P1500 - a while ago when it was like $175AR and even that is functional but in a scary way.

Yo

P.s.: This coupon seems to work only on the multifunction devices that are reduced by 20% already - OP IMO the title should be amended

rossman- yes, the dell printers are rebadged lexmarks... but the cartridges are somehow unique -- so no replacing a dell cartridge with a lexmark one.... or at least that's what some reviews say.

I'm on the fence for a P1500 laser.... can anyone that owns one say if the printer-driver allows "2-up" or "4-up" printing? Also, any other usefull comments about the P1500 would be appreciated.

This might sound like a weird question, but... : Does it have a power on/off switch?
(I only ask cuz I know of a different brand printer that does _not_ -- and that would annoy the heck out of me)

thanks-

The A960 is a great printer. Jump on it for the price. The other AIOs are not bad. The P1500 is also nice. The 1700 is new and replacing the 1500 so should be just as good. Above that, I would chose the W5200 or W5300 for a good workgroup printer.
On the Lexmark question.....They are being made by Lexmark but are not Lexmark printers with just the Dell sticker on them. The ink is exclusively Dell. The Lexmark will not work. But with coupons you can usually get a great deal on ink.

ttown - P1500 works nicely. It's a tiny bit noisy when producing copies, but is inaudible, when idle for more than 10 minutes or so. not sure what you mean by "2 up" and "4up" - please explain. And finally yes - it does have both a hard power on/off switch on the left side.

Hey, what makes the A960 better than the other ones? Obviously its probably a better printer, but it looks kinda bleh to me (I know, who buys a printer for its looks), and the other ones just look better to me. Would it be worth it to get it over the others?

"2up" and "4up" mean that 2 (or 4, respectively) "pages" get printed on a single side of a single sheet -- and the font is reduced automatically.
A "2up" document printed in "portrait" would print 2 shrunk down pages side-by-side (not front-back) on one sheet -- so you'd have to hold the printed page sideways (landscape wise) to read it.
If it's possible, it should be somewhere in the "printer settings" -- probably near where you'd specify landscape/portrait -- or maybe under "advanced" settings, if there are any.

4up is the same idea, just shrunk down ever further.
It comes in very handy when printing a tech-manual or a set of notes -- where compactness is more important than easy readability.

Thanks for your reply. I went for it, justifying the purchase as < $0.04/page + paper. Worst case, it'll hold me over till another hot-deal comes along.

The only difference between the Lexmark and Dell printers are the tops. The Dell cartridges have a kind of L shape and the Lexmarks have a U I belive. It is possiblt to modify the Dell printers to take Lexmark cartridges if you file down inside of the flip cover in the printer.

This is, of course, done at your own risk

Got the P1500 laser all hooked up.... and I'm quite happy with the print quality. But....
The printer is much louder than the Lexmark inkjet it is replacing -- but not terrible. I have it about 15ft away... if it were next to me, I'd probably be more annoyed.

I have suspicions about the drivers, though.... I installed it as a shared printer on a pentium 120, win98 machine w/64mb ram -- and now the desktop background color is all messy. It's ok after I refresh it.
Also, I had problems when printing to it from a winXP machine over a network. I haven't figured it all out yet, but the XP machine will hang unless the print-manager is manually started on the win98 machine.
It might be a printer-driver problem, or OS bug, or a problem with other services on the win98 machine -- where I run Belkin's bulldog UPS server software. The firewall I also run on it indicates an inbound communication from the UPS right at the time I print from the remote winXP machine.

If anyone has had similar probs and knows what's happening, I'd love to know the best way to handle it.
If I can't find a better solution (here or w/google), I'll be content with making the print-manager start up at boot time on the win98 machine.

If anyone besides me cares about the "print N-up" option, I can confirm that it does 2-up, 4-up, 6-up, 9-up and 16-up. 4-up is about the limit with my vision.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the P1500. It serves my needs and will pay for itself in under 6 months.
I still have a few bugs to work out, but they probably don't apply to 98% of people out there.

Big thanks to the OP!

...and before I get crap for running win98 on a P120 -- it does what I need it to do just fine!
