For those who remember the threads, I should title this "Bodybuilder Chow Returns!" I posted twice before about using online coupons at drugemporium.com to get 1/3 off of their ProLab whey. Here are the threads:
thread 1
thread 2
The deal is back and better than ever--50% off! For the coupon, try dealcatcher.com here.

Some good buys after discount:
ProLab whey protein 5 lbs.=$15
EAS Myoplex 42 packs=$40
MetRX 40 packs=$40
Twinlab Ironman PR bars=$0.50 each [that's incredible!]

The drugemporium site seems to have merged/changed titles to HealthCentralRX.com, and their sports supplement lineup is definitely much larger, so browse through it for your own good buys. This company can be a bit slow to ship (although I have also had same-day shipping), so be patient. If you have questions about "why use whey protein?" or "what is a supplement?" please read through the earlier threads.

Stock up now, as the coupon expires at the end of the month. Remember, this site has all sorts of drugstore stuff, including prescription drugs (go figure) and even school supplies. Dealcatcher lists the coupon as up to $75, but to clarify, that means up to $75 in savings. Shipping for standard ground is $3.95 for any size order (incl. 25 lbs. of whey!), which is the lowest you'll find (until Onvia starts carrying this stuff ).

If you've ordered previously, you may have to delete your cookies, as the site wouldn't allow me to use the coupon on the first try, even though I hadn't in fact used it before.

Tommygun--I agree, so I changed the title. Glad you got some use out of this. So, you're going to order $450 worth of stuff? (Max discount of $75 with $150 order, times 3.) That's a lot of MRP shakes!

Love the BodyBuilder Chow threads, alot of great info that really helped.

Cremefilled - how about some more recipes for Prolabs Vanilla Whey? I tried the pistachio pudding one last night, dat ROX!

I didn't go for the 2 5lb Prolab Whey deal that was in the other thread, just because I didnt want too much of the stuff without tasting it first. I picked up one 5lb at a local store for $29.95 (no tax) so it came out about the same at the time. Been back on protein for about 2 weeks now and feel great.

Anyway the online deal sounds great, Im looking to pick up the Myoplex, Chocolate Prolab Whey, and the PR bars. Anyone know if they taste any good?

thanks cremefilled!

I tried the MyoPlex vanilla flavor and it tasted like sh#t. It sits like a rock in my stomach. Then I finally give the LEAN MACHINE from SNSONLINE a try and have stick with it ever since.

WageSlave looks like they got both the 42-ct (in Chocolate) and 20 count (about everything) boxes.

Which flavor is the best?

Tommygun--I like all the Twinlab Ironman bars, but the cookies'n'creme is especially good. I used to buy those bars for $2.19 at GNC when I had a class schedule that kept me on campus until mid-afternoon, so $0.50 each is a great deal. Since Twinlab bought the company, they are now $1.19 each at GNC, so you might try them out individually. Note that they are not necessarily classified a "protein bar"--they follow the 40-30-30 C/P/F ratio. They are filling and have a glycemic index of 39, which is very, very low--no chance of a sugar rush.

I agree that the best tasting Myoplex is chocolate. I really like original MetRx because it blends very easily with other flavors.

ironBEAR--keep in mind that the more "stuff" you add to a protein shake, the more it becomes a snack/meal/MRP--however you want to term that--because you are adding calories. That's one reason I like the Jello sugarfree pudding--it's very low in calories (20 cal for 1/5 pack).

Here's some good combinations:
vanilla protein+vanilla pudding+cinnamon
vanilla protein+orange juice (and maybe vanilla pudding)
vanilla protein+apple juice+vanilla pudding+cinnamon/or pumpkin pie spice
vanilla protein+milk+small amount of mint extract (also good w/choc.protein)
vanilla protein+white chocolate sugarfree pudding (very rich taste)
vanilla protein+vanilla pudding+coconut extract
vanilla protein mixed with any flavor Crystal Lite (raspberry esp. good)
choc. protein+choc.fudge pudding (+natural peanut butter optionally)
any protein flavor with "no-cook" cheesecake mix (Royal makes a sugarfree version); nonfat cream cheese + some nutrasweet isn't quite as good, but it can work too (nf cr.cheese is mainly protein, btw)
any flavor of protein+full pack of sugarfree pudding+16 oz. of water; pour immediately and let sit for 10 minutes and it tastes just like "regular" pudding (I usually add enough protein to replace the calories of the recommended amount of milk)

You can also try fruit Jello (don't let it set for very long), any type of fruit extract, milk (of course!), Nestle sugarfree Quik, nutrasweet to taste, and so on. Another tip is that I found some ice trays that make very small cubes (the diameter of a dime), which makes the blending much easier (I always add ice). Frozen fruit is also easy to blend. You can freeze your own, like banana chunks, or find a wide variety of frozen fruit at the supermarket. Try going down the spice isle of a large supermarket and seeing what sounds good. Fruit flavored diet pops with vanilla whey can also be good (e.g., Mountain Dew, Sprite). Psyllium powder (Metamucil) basically has no taste, so I will add a tsp. to a shake if I know that I won't be getting much fiber that day.

The two flavors that I keep coming back to day after day are Prolab vanilla whey with sugarfree pistachio pudding, and Prolab chocolate whey with sugarfree butterscotch pudding. Even if cost was no object at all, I think I'd want to start out my mornings with one of those two flavors.

If you try a search on deja.usenet.com for "protein bar," you'll find some recipes for homemade bars (usually based on protein powder, peanut butter, and corn or rice syrup). Report back if you find a good one!

Oh, I forgot to mention that a great breakfast is oatmeal with vanilla whey (add it _after_ cooking), nutrasweet, natural chunky peanut butter, and maybe some fruit (canned peaches, strawberry jam, etc.). You can measure that out to hit a 40-30-30 ratio (i.e., "The Zone" diet). Some people like to mix milk with vanilla whey and pour that over breakfast cereal (don't try this on a sweet cereal, as it will be too sweet; this is good with Grape Nuts Flakes).

The best bars by far are from sportpharma. They really do have the best taste, and still come packed with decent protein. I think the bar is the Promax bar. They have very salivating names too, like apple pie a la mode; lemon chiffon; i recommend both of those.

Yes, thank you for that deal! I am amazed there is actually a coupon for that much off! Just bought 2 42ct cases of choc Myoplex.

Also, if any of you guys relie on protein bars and have to count every gram of carbs or tally up calories, you might want to check this out.

Whew.

I just want to remind everyone that "decent" protein bars are hard to come by. Yes, SportPharma Promax bars taste great but beware of the sugar and fat content in those bars. Used as a meal replacement with a liter of water instead of Mickey D's and/or if your metabolism is pretty high is alright once in awhile. Or if you need a quick snack right after a workout in conjunction with a shake.

But if you are addicted to them thinking that you are doing yourself a favor you'd better be careful. It's better to scarf down a protein shake smoothie since most decent protein shakes will have half of the sugars and maybe 1/5 of the fat and less KCals.

Sorry to be a party pooper.

Having said all this i'd recommend Clif Bars since they are cheaper and you can save your money for the real deal, protein powder. Prolab Whey Protein is a good one. Haven't tried the Just Whey, the cheaper one but i'm sure that it's alright being a Prolab product.

bill_n_opus --I don't disagree with the idea of counting calories, but I think it's a little too simplistic to say "sugars are bad" and "fat is bad." It all depends. After a workout, high-glycemic carbs can be good to replenish glycogen. Sucrose (table sugar) actually has a lower glycemic index than many carb sources that are presumed healthy (whole-wheat bread, rice, potatoes, carrots, etc.). And some fats are healthy (monounsaturates, correct amounts of omega-3 and -6), and some are unhealthy (TFAs, saturated). Those statements are greatly simplified too, of course.

One of the reason that I like protein shakes is that I can eat "junk food" and come up with whatever ratios of macronutrients I want. Tonight I had a big protein shake and Rice Krispies cookies (made with non-TFA margarine) after my workout, and it tasted great, and was healthy to boot. (I wanted something high-glycemic.) There a lot of books about balancing macronutrients (that is, controlling carb/protein/fat ratios at each meal, largely to modulate insulin response), but the best is probably still Barry Sears' "The Zone." Other post-workout faves are Super Sugar Golden Crisp cereal, fatfree brownies, and pancakes...mmmh...pancakes...
