Because there's no point if it takes him longer than 2.5 months to use the 120GB.

Precisely, I expect 120 GB to last me a LONG time.

Switched from Giganews to the $11 Astraweb plan. Thanks!

Works great with WHS + SABnzbd+

Orly? Please explain.

Well, having it running on WHS since its always on, and SABnzbd+ will take things from RSS and automatically download/decompress/par check. It also auto sorts the downloaded TV shows into Shows & Seasons. I personally have it download to pooled drive (D) and then have it moved to networked Video drive which is shared throughout my network so I have access to any show it downloads without any extra work.

Heres a link
http://www.wegotserved.co.uk/w...d_for_your_Home_Server

I just wanted to say thanks for this and the people who recommended Astraweb.

I switched from Giganews ($25) to Astranews ($11). Speed has been great so far and haven't run into any retention issues.

I knew there was a torrent program for WHS, did not realize there was one for usenet. Took me some time to figure out SABnzbd+ but it works great with WHS. I have it scheduled to download my TV shows when I'm asleep and at work. I don't know how I managed without this.

Thanks again!

On a side note, SABnzbd+ Manager for WHS (Addin) got released this week, if you're interested, take a look at the wegotserved homepage. I personally have it setup so that it is webfacing, so that I can check it anywhere via xxxx.homeserver.com/sabnzbd/ or no-ip

Haha, ok, I sometimes forget, some people aren't as big of a usenet service as I am. I blow past 60GB from usenet some months.

Well been with Thundernews for 2 days; started off great with a 16Mbp/sec rate.

Today it seems to be capped at 2Mbp/Sec.
If I switch back to my Newshosting settings then I can get 16Mbp/sec again.

If I change the port, then I get 16Mbp/Sec for around 5 minutes. Something is definitely throttling the connection. Can't rule out my ISP, but either way it makes no difference since Newshosting doesn't have an an issue in this area (been with them for 2 years).

Couldn't obtain any support, so in the process of signing up for AstraWeb and will ask Thundernews for a refund for their unlimited/unthrottled plan.

At this point I would not recommend the deal; at least it is not working for me.

after about 3 weeks of being with thundernews i've started to have the same problem. i've got a 20mb connection, and this week after about 5 minutes of full speed it would go down to about 200kps. not sure if this is thundernews or my isp doing this

IMHO (at least for me) astraweb is one of the better ones out there. Compared to the top 3 or so usenet providers, they are the only ones who provide pay-as-you-go service in which the bandwidth you buy never expires. I prefer this because there may be long periods of time where I may download nothing or very little, which doesn't justify paying a monthly fee for usenet access. It's great for the budget-conscious. Also there is no transfer rate caps with pay-as-you-go and the max connections is 30 more than the monthly plans.

As previously noted, usenet is still relevant since at least several of the popular providers don't cap transfer rates, so you can get better speed than with bittorrent many times.

That's my $0.02 anyway.

Interesting.. I like the pay as you go.

Can anyone recommend a newsreader? I used Agent waaaay back when (late 90's?).. what's a good one now?

Try NewsLeecher. Thats what I use. Great program.

I love newsgroups. I have been using usenetserver.com for around a year now at 14.95/month unlimited with SSL but it looks like I make be switching to astraweb.

For those on the fence with Astraweb pay as you go, they now offer 180GB for $25. I have no idea if that's a new everyday low price or a temporary sale price.

I'm a light user, so this is perfect for me.

Thanks to those who recommended astraweb, I never knew about them before this thread.

You can request a 1GB test account for free here. Just choose the appropriate button, and put your email.

I used a fake name and it came to my spam email account in like 5 minutes.

I used it for a while but experienced a lot of crashes under Vista. I tried reinstalling several times but to no avail.

I'm still quite happy with Easynews for $10/mo. Their global search web interface and http downloading truly rocks.

The astraweb 180gb for $25 is perfect for me. Signed up this past weekend and my connection to their servers is very fast, and they seem to have great retention.
