Be cautious and do your homework. I"ve heard horrible stories about AT&T Cellular services. From my research the best are in the following order:

1. Verizon
2. NexTEL
3. SoutherLinc
4. Cingular
5. AllTel
6. VoiceStream
7. Sprint PCS
8. AT&T Wireless
9. SunCom

Of course it varies greatly from area to area, but that is about how they rate currently. Just my opinion though, after A LOT of research.

In the Minneapolis area, AT&T is the best in my experience. I've had Voicestream, Verizon (my current service) and AT&T. My wife currently has Sprint. AT&T is by far the best all-around of any of them here.

I also just got back from a trip through Wisconsin with friends. Between the group of us there were two Sprint phones, an AT&T and a Verizon. AT&T was the one that had signal the most and had the fewest roaming areas (my Verizon Americas Choice went to roaming shortly after entering Wisconsin, even though the areas we were in are shown as being non-roaming on the map on their web site).

My wife hates Sprint because of the customer service and because she isn't always notified of waiting voice mails in a resonable time (sometime it takes a day or so for the phone to show there is a voice mail waiting. She is a freelanser and has lost business because she didn't know that a client called until it was too late).

Voicestream is bad if you travel much because they are all digital so as soon as you leave a major area or highway, you don't have signal (not even roaming since it is all digital. You just can't call at all).

The only reason I am currently on Verizon is because they had the phone that works with the Audiovox PocketPC. I'll switch back to AT&T once I upgrade my PocketPC (which is every year or so).

Just found a downside to this deal...

Check the website, if you only signup for one year (rather tan two) the 3000 minutes are WEEKEND only minutes, NOT night & weekend minutes. Plus you will have a $26 activation fee...

So for a two year contract it's not a bad deal. But for a one year, not so hot as it seemed...

Coverage and service varies widely based on the area. For example,
in the SF Bay area, the two early companies to the market were GTE (now part of Verizon) and Cellular One (eaten into AT&T San Francisco and then into AT&T WS [incidently Cellular One was sooo much better than AT&T SF and that was still better than the AT&T it is now] ).

So those two companies have the best service here.

In Berkeley, where I'm going to school, Cingular and Sprint are just horrid. It's even worse when there's no other Cingular ppl around (i.e. summer, winter break) cuz of the relaying those phones do.

Not bragging or moaning, just pointing out that you really have to check the area you're going to use it in.

Incidently, if you get AT&T, you can cancel in the first 30 days for whatever reason (you still owe the first month, just no cancelation penalty)

500 anytimes and 3000 N&W is a pretty good deal for AT&T Wireless. But the National Network plan doesn't mean that you never get charged for roaming. You're local around the entire nation as long as you stay within the AT&T network. Which means if you leave a major city and go out into the boonies, it's $0.69/minute because you will be connecting through some other random cell phone network. Just check the coverage map and make sure you fall within a major city area. Digital One Rate is the only nationwide plan AT&T offers that never charges roaming, and that starts at $59.99.

just wanted to say that i was recently looking for a cell phone plan and ended up with at&t (this particular plan)

i more or less wanted the motorola v60 and at&t had the only good deal to get it relatively cheap.
(also got cingular to offer a comparable deal, but it was 2 years)

advice: work the dealer! even though they only dropped the phone price to 100$ after rebate, i got them to waive the activation, and give me unlimited nights and weekends. tried also for educational bonuses but they didnt work with the national plan. also changed 2 yr contract to 1 yr.

the extra 200 min promotion came up after i signed up service-- i called up my dealer and she added the promotion. how nice. now i'm happy. be nice to your dealer!

$35.00 for 500/unlimited and a good phone is fine with me. i haven't been on hold for more than 10 seconds when i've called customer service so far (NC). i just wish my phone had games on it.

2 year contracts are a bad idea for the consumer , you are stuck with a $ penalty if the service deteriorates ( often does with wireless cos ). Also if you live in Atlanta, pick another provider because AT&T Wireless Atlanta local service is terrible - spotty coverage, often dead voicemail . I know because I have them and am very disappointed .
