If you customize above $1250, you get $500 off, so that makes it $750.

For the 17-in model (vostro 1700) you need to customize above $1300.

Link fixed.

Also, I dunno what you're doing, but I can still get the discount. For the 17-in model, I think you need to customize it above $1300. I should mention that in the OP.

Where does the discount show up? Do you have to run through the entire checkout to find it?

I've got a 1700 figured to $1318 right now and no discount shows up.

I just added mine to the cart and it shows the discount. You have to click on the ad HERE to get the discount.

Questions:
-any idea what CPU to get? How big of a difference going from 1.6 GHz to 2.0?
-XGA or XGA+ on a 14" display? XGA+ sounds nice, but will I be squinting all the time? For reference, I'm currently using a 700m, which has a 12" display at 1280x800.
-Does the 9-cell battery stick out like on the 700m?

Ah, I'm stupid. I clicked on one of the preloaded ones rather than the first link on the very left.

Disregard my posts. Nice deal, OP.

I think XGA+ is 1440x900. The CPU is up to you. I think dell's 1500 ad is bugged, they want $670 for a T8100. I think the 9-cell sticks out.

I'm reading reviews of the 1400 now and found out the 9-cell does stick out. I'll settle for the 6-cell because I move about a LOT. Still not sure about whether to go with 1280x800 or 1440x900, but I will go for the cheaper CPU. I want to thank you for posting this deal, but I really don't need to spend $900

edit: Actually $750+tax, with free S/H. It's just sitting in the cart, waiting for checkout . . . so tempting.

I was thinking about buying one of those Everex XT5300T machines this week as a mobile gaming unit, but I'm liking the specs on a Vostro 1500 build. I have to take a hit on the screen size, but I'd get a faster hard drive, processor, and video card. Here's my prospective build:

Intel® Core? 2 Duo T7250 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition
15.4 in Wide Screen SXGA+LCD Display w/TrueLife?
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce? 8600M GT
160GB Free Fall Sensor Hard Drive, 7200RPM, for Dell Vostro 1500 Notebook
8X CD/DVD Burner w/ double-layer DVD+R write capability, w/ Roxio Creator
Dell Wireless 1395 802.11g Wi-Fi Internal Card
Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal (2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate)
Integrated 2.0 mega pixel Web Camera
56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

$798 (with tax) shipped + another $40 for 2GB of RAM from newegg.

It's not dead, I already recanted that.

I'm still playing with builds due to the t9300 pricing snafu. Right now I'm looking at a build with the T9300 (2.5GHz/800Mhz FSB/6MB cache) & 256MB 8600M GT for about $800 after discount and Discover cashback. I'm trying to decide between screens now.

Reason some probably see it as dead is as follows...

1. Dell is wierd about accessories. Monitors, projectors, software (other than OS), etc DONT count towards the system cost... but carry cases and some other stuff will.
2. the 1700 requires you spend $1300 NOT $1250 to get the discount. They contridict themselves a LOT on their site, saying $1250, but I have never been able to get the $500 knocked off without going above $1300 and I've tried tons of builds.

Ok deal... but I cant bite. After tax its over $900 for me... If it was $1100 or higher I'd be all over it. But having to spend $150 on a hard drive upgrade thats worth maybe $50 and $75 on a $20 ram upgrade just to make the price req kills it for me. I guess you could max out the price with a big CPU upgrade, but I dont need a faster cpu and prices on even those upgrades look pretty bad.

Basically the config I look at winds up being ~ what newegg carries similar machines from other manufacturers for.
1.4 duo, 2gig, 200+HD, 8600M GT

Works for me

Configured the 1500 upgrading CPU to T9300, OS to Vista home prem., and GPU to 8600 and it totaled $1257. Added it to the cart and it subtracted $500 and totals $757

Finally bit the bullet. I actually reverted to a modified version of the previous setup for the sake of time. While the extra speed of the t9300 would have been nice, it was ultimately cheaper for me to configure a system at 2.0 Ghz and it will save the time of re-installing Vista on a new HD.

It ended up costing me $772 (with tax) shipped for the 2 Ghz duo, 15.4" XGA+, 8600mGT, 160GB 7200rpm drive, Vista Home Premium, Webcam, Dell Wireless N, Bluetooth, 6-cell battery, CD burner, etc. I've already got two 2GB sticks ready to pop in, so I should be flying along whenever this sucker ships. My prospective ship date is the 28th right now.

Thanks again OP!

Does anyone know if the wireless N works at 5Ghz?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found that the dell wireless N works at both 2.4 or 5GHz.

I got in on a similar deal a month ago for a nicely specced 17" notebook. I've been waiting for it to come up again to get my wife a 14", and I went back and forth on the spec choices for a long time (she doesn't need anything that screams) and decided to spend a good chunk of the $1249 on "accessories." I called in to see if I could get items not listed in the online configuration, and apparently the CSR didn't understand (ie I speak english) my request because it was screwed up (and full price) when he transferred me to the checkout person. When I got back to him, he says he never told me it was ok...and refused to let me talk to a supervisor. When I called back and spoke to an operator, they put me through (so it seemed) to an American CSR who tried to help get what I wanted, but after asking for help found that she couldn't do it. Finally, I went back to the online configuration to see what I could work out there. Decided what "extras" to buy, and of course...no dice. All of this took hours of research and (re)configuring, so I've been bummed out about what is otherwise a great deal. If you are looking for a solid/fast machine, this is a fantastic deal that has been popping up every few weeks. For whatever it's worth, I am quite happy with my 1700, and the shipping and delivery were well ahead of their estimated dates.

You mean 6600 right?

If you got a 6800 please link me. I'd buy one if I could get one of those on it.
