id got a Epox 8RDA+ board, an xp2400, and 2x256mb of pc2700 DDRam . I would then need to buy a raid controller ... because that is one feature that i think the 8rda+ is missing.

I would still have money left for beer too ... wooo

Bah!

Get a p4 3ghz w/ HT...oh wait, the processor alone is over $600! LOL I WILL be getting this, but probably not until spring when prices are quite a bit cheaper.

Thx for all the replies. Reason I ask is because I have a 1.9 P4 with RDRAM 800 Samsung and it works ok unless it gets hot. Not really hot but warmish hot, heh. I have taken almost everything out, video card, motherboard, and pretty much all other pci boards. I believe it's the ram that is causing the problem. What happens is if it gets to about 75+ room temperature my pc will freeze during directx apps(shows straight lines going up and down the screen). If it stays cool in my room I can run any directx app for days, I ran madonion 2001SE for over 1100 test. The only thing even close to hot in my PC is my ram but I can't say for sure if that's it or not since I have not switched it out. That's why I asked the question, I am trying to figure out if it's worth switching those main 3 components right now or not(for $500). I have looked at tons of benchmarks for Athlons and P4s cpus motherboards, DDR ram and even new RDRAM. Also checked out water cooling and peltiers for overclocking. But for now it just doesn't seem worth it and my PC is sitting next to my AC doing fine But I need to do something before the summer.

Thanks to our good friends at NewEgg and Crucial:

Asus P4PE/R/GBL/F/SATA - $160 (free shipping)
Pentium 4 2.4b 512K 533MHz - $191 (free shipping)
Crucial 512MB DDR PC2700 ~ $145 (with basic shipping)

Total - $496

Edit: ...forgot to mention why I'd choose (chose) them. Asus P4Pe is known for stability -- if I were a hardcore overclocker I may go with Epox. P4 2.4b 533 currently seems to be the best bang for the buck. Went with Crucial for reliability.

why? what an utter waste of money. that CPU is $1050 here in Canada... i would never spend more than $350 CAD on a CPU. (about 225 or so USD)

This set up would be really sweet. I got the prices from www.ajump.com

Asus A7N8X Deluxe $138.00
AMD XP 2400+ $202.00
2 sticks Samsung Memory 256mb $82 each

Total is $504

I like this system because the motherboad has the Dual DDR, Dolby digital sound and serial ata raid. The processor is a good deal for the price. It is true that P4 is more stable but I have never had any stability issues with an AMD solution.

No it isn't. Maybe 5 years ago. Not now.
Although Intel chipsets have had fewer problems in the past than the likes of VIA and SIS.
But the NForce 2 is a very solid chipset.
Above I recommended a P4 system, but the system you are recommending is very good too.
If I were building a new system right now, I would probably have a hard time deciding between

Asus P4PE with P4 2.4b
or
Asus A7N8X Deluxe with XP 2400+

Those would be top picks on each side and I think price and performance would be just about equal.

I'd get a cute little puppy. It's not as fast as a 2.53 GHz P4, and can't store as much data as a 512 DDR333 stick, but it's so damn adorable!

Ahem. Ok, getting in touch with my manly side. There. Better now.
