Anyone know?

According to one of the reviews on the product page, it's a Western Digital WD5000AAKS drive which is, according to Newegg 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0.

May not be worth the risk to try the 40.00 rebate instead of the 30.00 rebate. The receipt will print out with a reference to the 30.00 rebate on it. May give them the excuse to deny it.

for me it is coming up $83.94 AR and 5% off not including shipping. Seems like a good deal for an external drive. This has probably been asked before but does the drive on the inside qualify for a longer warranty than the 1 year that the whole unit comes with? Thanks!

Nope, the drive that comes inside is considered "OEM" drive by the manufacturer, and the retail drive warranty does not apply. If you try to RMA the drive for repair from the drive manufacturer, they usually tell you to contact the system builder - ie Dell, Gateway, or in this case, Cavalry.

Ok, not to be dense but if it is an "OEM" drive wouldn't it qualify for an "OEM" warranty? This same drive on newegg has a 3 year warranty and it is OEM. Are you saying that if you buy the drive from newegg WD will tell you to take it back to the system maker for warranty? If not, then how would WD know where the drive came from besides the fact that it was an OEM?

Just curious on that... Either way it would be ok because my CC gives me another year of warranty for free and I can pay ~$20-30 for another 3 years of warranty which includes complete replacement even if I pick up the drive and drop it out a window.

They go by the serial number of the drive. You can go to the western digital web page and plug in the serial number and it will tell you the expiration of the warranty on the bare drive. Of course, you are not going to know the serial number unless you open up the case and void the warranty of it as a complete external drive unit.
I got a couple of those Elements 400GB external drives with the western digital 400gb drive inside. I got them just to use the bare drives as internal drives. The bare drives came up with a warranty by themselves, but it was around a year warranty, and they were already like 3 months old, so I have until March 2008 for the warranty.
Now, if they require a receipt I'm out of luck, but I don't think they do.

I think we are using the word "OEM" for 2 different meanings here. In your case, you are thinking of OEM as not in a retail box. But I was using the term OEM to mean the drives that system integrators buy in bulk for cheap, and they have no support from the original drive manufacturer. I've tried to RMA a couple of these type of drives before and got that kind of message. As mentioned, they keep track of the RMA status by serial numbers.
