there have been some noise and performance complaints with the perpendicular recording seagate 7200.10's. i personally have 2 of these in EIDE/PATA 400GB and have no complaints. i just ordered the SATA 7200.10 500GB for $150 since I need to pair it up with a 7200.9 for a RAID 0 1TB setup (yep... for pr0n!)
there are also reportedly a higher failure rate with the 7200.10, but with seagate's top notch 5 year warranty it's okay as long as you don't put crucial data in there, if you're going to do it, RAID 1/mirror 2 of these babies instead.
a few years ago maxtor and hitachis used to fail on me, then it was WD's, then seagates actually... i think the failure rate won't be that much different, sometimes its people's luck (or bad luck) have to do with their brand preferences

Really? Where have you seen reports of high failure rates of 7200.10 drives? So far, my 320GB 7200.10 drive is performing flawlessly. Completely quiet and fast. The only propblem with it is that it's about 80% full now though... might be time for a new HDD soon.
They are probably starting to drop the prices on the 500GB's since the 1TB drives will be out this quarter. Hitachi (I think?) plans to sell theirs for 399, not sure what Seagate will want.
