I am building a simple system for my daughter. Can anyone suggest a reliable MoBo to use with the 1600 or 1700? Onboard sound and LAN would be nice, as would at least a 4x AGP slot, since I don't think I want to rely on onboard video. Overclocking is not important here; stability is.

You might consider an nForce board. I've found them to be as or more stable than the Via boards, the onboard sound/lan are great, the onboard video (GeForce2MX) might even be sufficient.

Maybe an Asus A7N-266VM? $68 @ Newegg.

Both look good, and the ASUS looks especially sweet, but another question. The $30 30gig Maxtor HD I bought is ATA133. I know I can run it just fine at ATA100, but can anyone suggest a basic board that is also ATA133 capable? If not, I will likely get the ASUS from NewEgg. I've had good luck with them in the past, and they made things good the only time they made a mistake.

The only problem I have with TCWO is: *OEM CPU's come with a 20 day warranty without fan purchase, 1 year warranty with fan purchase.

I don't like being forced into buying a HSF I neither need nor want just to get a decent warranty...

Not if stability is an issue. I have had 3 that are shaky at best. I like anything AMD-761 based, if performance is not an issue. The problem I had is pretty much detailed HERE

If you don't care overclocking. Asus A7N266-VM is a very good board.
It has almost build-in everything, Video, Lan and hi quality sound.
I think this board is used by Sony and HPQ.

I dunno..I built my wife an 800 Duron system using this board and some old Kingmax pc150 sdram I had lying around. Loaded XP Home on it and haven't had so much as a hiccup out of it since it went online eight mos.ago. Maybe I was lucky?

If you go to pricewatch.com you can see that just about ALL amd chips are coming down. Heck you can get a Athlon XP 2100+ for less than $90 now. Now thats some bang for your buck

I know it sells very well, and that many have had good luck with them. I had 3 bad ones, and 2 friends that "let the blue smoke out" during normal operation. The issue I linked to above is well documented, and has been addressed (I think) in newer boards. Just my 2 cents.
