I was at my local walmart last night and they had a 51" projection screen philips for $500 no rebates no games. if it would have been HDTV I would have had trouble getting it in my trunk but i would have found a way.

Stay away from that tv. Pretty much it's been running 24/7 for at least a a year. They get abused in the store as none of the settings are ever correct. Walmart would be the only warranty for it and technically you only have 90 days but you could get lucky and they'd give your money back up to a 1 year time period.

In two years a 51" 4:3 non HDTV will be worth 100 bucks (if that)

Yeah, right. Congress is really going to let 95% of the television viewing public have their sets made obsolete, so that they can enjoy the "benefit" of returning to rabbit-ear antennas for HDTV views of the latest must-see "Friends" ripoff on NBC.

Anyone that signs there SigNaTure with caps and small letters has got to be a true economics genius. Grow up little dude, you can't even find vanilla 32" TV's for a $100 yet.

What HotshoT69 (note the clever use of "69". Oh, ho ho, so witty...) was referring to, I think, is the upcoming "mandatory" switchover to HDTV transmission. This won't happen for a long, long time, though, because the American public would never put up with A) their current TV sets being made obsolete, or B) being forced to buy HDTV->NTSC converters.

As an example of the reality of the situation, the majority of people are perfectly happy with VHS. NTSC DVDs are more than they will ever need. HDTV is completely unnecessary for the vast majority of the viewing public.

A Best Buy employee actually tried to tell me that if I bought a non-HDTV now, it would "stop working" in two years when all the networks switched over. I took my business elsewhere.

If that were true you could always watch DVD's and VHS. Plus Dish isn't switching over anytime soon, tho I wish they would convert half the channels to HDTV for free!... That would be nice... I think they only have a few HBO/Star channles and a payperview in HDTV
