I'm running a dual boot (Win98SE & Win2K) with 512MB of RAM. For Win98SE I have the swap file set at 250/250.

With 512mb ram, 250/250 should do it. I run 384mb and have mine set to 400/400 in W2K.

I thought I read somewhere that you should set the swap at twice the ram...

Just curious as I have 384 of ram and a 768/768 swap..maybe I need to cut back.

j*sus: You can definitely cut back. The formula you refer to (set your swap for 2.5 times the amount of RAM you have) dates back to the days when 16MB was considered to be a lot of RAM. It doesn't equate any more.

Davegod75: The optimal size of a swap file varies from user to user, depending primarily on one's applications. I do a fair amount of photoshop work and have found that 512MB of RAM plus a 250MB swap file works well for me. (Most of the time.)

That's wrong. If you have less RAM that someone alse, you need bigger swap file that he does. AFAIK the best way to set size of swap file is to use System Monitor. Let windows manage your virtual memory and after heavy usage of your computer for one full day, check the peak value for "Memory Manager: Swapfile in use". Set minimum size of your swap file to this value. Don't set maximum size (some day you might be using your computer more "heavy way" than usually and windows will be needing more virtual memory. Now, if you have placed your swap file on dedicated partition (I believe it's not such a bad idea), I would set size of this partition to anything above 150% of your swap file minimum size.
I hope it makes some sense...

Cheers,
SB

Actually I am not even sure that you need a swap file with 512 RAM. I have let Windows manage my sway file and this is what happens
256 - 100mb
384 - approx30 MB
448 - 0 swap??
