512M memory for $89: for real!

Someone made a passing reference to an $80 generic 512 meg DIMM from www.edgemicro.com a couple of weeks ago. It's so-called "high density" memory, which means you have to have a very modern motherboard to run it. I have a KT7/RAID, so I figured what the hell and ordered it on my American Express card.

After a week of kicking the tires on this one, I can confirm this is a for-real hot deal. The memory works as advertised without any problems whatsoever. If you have a motherboard that takes high density RAM, go for it.

I haven't tried all of the memory tweaking options; give me a list of what you want tested and I'll give it a shot. I have this running on a Win2k AS server machine that I primarily use for Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver etc. work, though I did do about 6 hours worth of Unreal Tournament without any issues.

How much of a speedup do this tweaks create? Guesstimate in terms of percentage of overall speed - 5%, 10%, 30%? System runs fast enough for most of my needs, though I'm all for free power.

Hgabriel - I think I've switched on what you asked. Hmmmm...

If you have a nice system that you plan to keep for a while, and you want performance, go with Crucial. Then you could run your memory way out of spec, 4-way interleave it, etc... and it'll perform happily cause those chips are over engineered.

If you just need bulk memory, or won't be running the memory out of spec, go with this deal.

Personally, I would go w/ 256MB of crucial for an Athlon system. The extra 256MB doesn't get you that much performance. Regardless, if you buy 512MB of ram because you need it, then you wouldn't be buying generic ram.

Anyways, I run 384MB of generic in my machine cause its a celeron running at 83FSB, on an old BX board that doesn't have the option of interleaving. So, memory quality doesn't matter to me.

UPDATE: OK, I turned on 4-way interleave and CAS2 per some requests. No crashes or other issues - this is running on a KT7/RAID. What else shall I test?

what fsb are you running at? cas2 and 4-way interleave mean nothing if you are running at a 100 mhz fsb. If you're running at let's say 140+, i'd buy it in a second.

Tell me what a "reasonable" FSB setting is for my setup and I'll give it a go. I'm running a Duron 700 overclocked to 850 now, with voltage bumped up a bit for stability.

I'm all for fooling with these settings as an test, but I think for a lot of the folks out there, the "hotness" of this deal isn't going to be determined by whether the no-name RAM can be pushed way out of spec. For my work (I'm a graphic designer/web developer), the biggest speed gain I can imagine is if I can have Photoshop, UltraDev, Illustrator, and several large files loaded at once without any disk swapping. I'm thrilled that I could get to this place for 80 bucks. Frankly, Unreal Tournament looks great at 850 mhz at my MB's boring default settings, and it doesn't matter whether I can eke out an incremental gain through tweaking.

As always, your mileage may vary.

I just went to the site and it states

PC-133 512MB 64X4-7 168-PIN MODULE

Memory is 64x4, constituting it high density ram. For compatibility questions please contact the manfuacturer of your motherboard to see if your particular model will support high density modules.
All memory modules sold by Edge Micro are made by major manufacturers such as Micron, Samsung, Hyundai, NEC, LG, LD, Cyclone, USA, and more. Because Edge Micro purchases only the most competitively priced modules available, the actual manufacturer of the memory can change from day to day.

This memory is covered by a 30-day money refundable warranty as well as a Lifetime replacement warranty through Edge Micro

Great find.

Will my MSI K7T Turbo support three of these sticks? The mobo website says this about my ram 168-pin unbuffered DIMM x3, maximum 1.5GB
