512MB cards from ATI this year?

so developers can use all 256mb and the cards still have memory left over for aa, or just for mad amounts of aa or mad amounts of textures. there is all sorts of reasons for more memory, obviously 640k is not nearly enough.

The first thing I can think of with 512MB is crazy amounts of AA. 8x RGSS gamma-corrected AA, anyone?

$200 9800Pro-128mb or $599 9800XT-512mb? You know some of the ubergeeks would have to buy the latest and greatest if only for braggin rights.

i have a gig of system ram that only gets maxed when i use certain programs so why should video cards be different.

That's pretty much all I can figure. It's certainly not needed for texture storage, so the only other reason I can think of for that kind of bandwidth is monstrous AA algorithms.

Its just a good PR thing to say at a time when Nvidia released the nv40 spec (feature a full sixteen pipelines), keeps the talk alive.

I will NOT be at all surprized to see new games pushing the need for 512mb any, think about, nobaody said 64m would be used much, then when 128m came, we never will use that much, now 256m, a very small amount of games do use that, then 512m to come. I can see that.

I know there IS a review somewhere done on games that really use/need 256m a fair amount over 128m. I'll look for it again a bit and post the links if/when I find them again.

I remember adding ram to my customers video card, upgrading them to 512k ram from 256k, then later from 512k to 1 whole meg! That stayed around from compaines till the matrox G450 days... it was a good idea, did NOT cost much extra.

I would sell the G400 and then later the customer could choose if to double the ram or not (32m to 64m).

Where would you find ram running at 365Mhz? Which is what the 9800XT has. That would cost less than the video card itself.

Where would you find ram for current cards like 9800xt?

It would be easy IF that was how they choose to do it, as it was for the G400 and before, dimm mod with correct ram is all thats needed (with heatsinks already attached). When ATI or whoever makes the card, they need the same ram speeds, thus in theory it could make some cards more affordable for people willing to wait to upgrade for more ram later.

I think prototype video cards use modules to add or remove ram. Remember seeing an ATI card I think had slots to add ram. I wouldn't mind being able to add how much ram you wanted. I also wouldn't mind socketed gpus. Different manufacturers make the boards. Then you buy the GPU and RAM you want. Then if you upgrade later just get a new gpu.
