2 of 256 sticks are normally supposed to be much cheaper than 1 stick of 512 though.

It seems that cheap PC2700 which are currently going around in Tokyo are Lei, V-Data, Seitec, or Mr. Stone so I expect to see more or less the same here. Other better brands such as Samsung will eventually catch up.

Yeah, I dont overclock at all.... I don't see the point anymore.. . back in the days of the 400a or the 366@550 that was a big deal.. but nowadays it doesnt have teh same umph

I overclock simply because I can take a $47 XP1700+ and run it at XP2300+++ speed, while saving about $70 in the process. ($5 SVC GC68 hsf).
And while it shows as XP2300+, it performs more like an XP2600+ due too increased FSB from 133MHz to 185MHz.
But you are very correct in that the umph is not there.
Most non-gamers would not notice any speed difference between 1GHz and 2GHz machines.

$69.99 for 512MB is a good deal, but I personally would still rather have 2 sticks of 256 meg, as 512 meg total is more than enough.
Plus I have 2 machines with 256 meg PC3200 already, so an extra 256 cheap is all that's needed.

BTW, for Dual Channel DDR to work, you can mix sticks. So 256meg plus 512meg would still work.

Because Microsoft is about to ship a new operating system, Windows Server 2003. As far back as Windows 95, whenever M/S ships a new O/S, memory prices drop. To illustrate the most dramatic example, in '94 memory was selling for as high as $100.00 per meg (yes, PER MEG!). Of course, we were all running Intel/AMD 80286-12s or, if we were lucky, the fancy new 80386 processor, and running Windows 3.1/3.11 on all of 2 meg of 120ns RAM, sometimes, 4 meg, but rarely more. So, along comes Windows 95. We've got 2/4 meg machines, and we find out that we'll need 8 meg, preferably 16, to run '95.

Your timeline is way off. By the time win95 came out the p133's etc had been on the market for a while, and 8-16 mb of ram was the norm.

I woundt doubt that you will find good pc2100 for this price in a few months. Ram prices have always drastically falen in the spring/summer, and raised up again in the fall/winter. It has been this way for as long as I can remember.

The problem for me though is that at ths point im running an ecs k7s5a... I love that board, it doesnt OC, but for it's cheap cheap price ti is veryf feature rich, especially when it released. My point being that at this point im running 512mb of SDR on it... when I get DDR, if I get 256mb stix.. thats it im done, no more slots. So I would rather get 512 so I have a slot oopen for future expansion, and it's not dual channel so no performance hit for me Now it's just about waiting for a qaulity module to drop down to sube 100$ then I will buy.

shoot I remember paying 100$ for a 128mb stick of apacer 133mhz sdram about 3 or 4 years ago and thinking it was the deal of the century. If I can get 512mb of DDR crucual or corsair or seomthing for under 100$(in one stick) I will be happy

You just need to flash the mobo with a hacked bios, I have a k7s5a and a 1700+ xp and is running it at 2000+. I mgiht be able to go high if I am not stuck with 512mb of crappy sdram.
