i am using 98, even set swapfile to as big as 1gig. Im only running DC, surfing webs and windows seem to hog all the memory to itself leaving nothing for me to do anything else. and then when I try to play games I get a BSOD and then lock up. windows is really stupid there no way around this. microsoft is suck. checked control panel help info and it said 0 available ram?!

Hmm, i'm sure one of the programs you are running can be the culprit. Just weed them out. I've found that a few "mods" for Direct Connect can eat up resources like mad.

You didn't provide any real information like hardware, software, what's in the startup folder, or what's running in task manager so I can't really help you. I do know that with that much memory your swap file shouldn't need to be any larger than 256 unless you're running autocad or photoshop.

The only real solution would be to upgrade to Windows 2000, Windows XP, or
Linux/BSD.

i have vcache set to 32megs, vga is 8megs 2x agp. this is really unusal as it just a windows bug that if you have 512meg or more it will steal most of the ram to itself. I run cacheman and it said 400megs of vcache when i did not set it but even after i set it it still gone somehow somewhere. right now I am not running DC, just IE5, encoding wmv and I am at 53 percent available ram. everytime it run out of ram there only one thng to do, that's reboot and that what microsoft wants
if I let windows manage swapfile on it's own it will set it to 256megs indefinitely and its not using the swapfile when this happen, so this could be the culprit?

The culprit is Windows 95 (98/ME count as 95). Clense your system of this horrible virus, and you'll be ok.

??? you gotta be kidding...

Its gotta be a memory leak! check to make sure nothing's starting up that shouldnt be when u boot - go to the boot menu and do step-by-step confirmation to see exactly whats going on.

I bet you would not have these memory problems if you dropped to 256MB RAM. Theres some tinkering you gotta do to get Win9x to be happy with high amounts of RAM.

well if by DC you mean Direct Connect that is your problem there seems to be a very large memory leak in there so try not running that for a lil while and see what happens.

i think i know why now this is happening, i am using cacheman and it say that windows is not using any swapfile even thought there is a huge swap on my harddrive on d:
could it be that windows think i have more then enough ram and so is disabled internally? with DC you never have enough ram thought, because it's taking up most of the memory like someone here said.

BSOD's are infamously tied to 98 .. the problem is most likely what was posted in the link to the Q article .. do what is suggested, and it will probably fix the problem .. though i agree with everyone, you'll probably see better performance if you upgrade to 2k ..

Do you use ICQ 2001?? I love the features in the new version but it leaks memory like a sieve...

(ICQ has always been bloated.. but never leaked the way it does.. at least on my system..)

I think maybe your Cacheman settings aren't correct. Try having it configure for a PowerUser configuration.

Yahoo pool is such a piece of %#*&^ applet. If you play any more than a couple of games it hogs all the resources then crashes.

it's DC because I am not running anything else and now down to 10 percent OMG. I'm only uploading to 4 ppl and not downloading anything. great program but very flawed.

I run DC as well, and i dont have memory management problems, though i run DC on 2k .. the problem may end with DC, but it probably starts with 98 .. just my thoughts ..
