Is this right? I've just been looking at a couple of the CD's I've formatted (Philips CDD-3610, DirectCD 2.5d) and see I'm only getting 534MB on each. This is a far cry from 650MB. Is something screwed up here or is this normal.

you loose 100 megs if it is a multisession disk I think. That may be wrong but I remember reading that there was an option that reduced the disk size by 100 megs.

I don't know if 100+ meg is the right number but formatting does suck up space.

I think it's only when you do the packet writing format. If you burn the normal way through a program, then you get all 650 MB.

yup packet writing formatting requires a bit of overhead in order for the cd to be read properly.

that's normal for a formatted cdrw. to get the full volume of your cdrw disk, burn it normally like a cdr ie not formatted. if you need to use it for something else afterwards, just use the erase tool!

DirectCD is for using a disk like a big floppy. Formatting it to support this usage will take up space.

If you want al 650MB, erase the disk and use it like you would a CDR (A CDR NOT using DirectCD!!!), and you will get it all.

DirectCD is actually very nice, so keep a set around to see what you like more, DirectCD or regular CDRW. I use it to back stuff up quickly that changes somewhat frequently, and cycle between 2 CDRWs just to make sure packet writing didn't screw up (seems reliable so far).

I've always wondered what people meant when they said they formatted a CD-R(W). I've never done any packet writing, I'm guessing you only have to format for that right?
