Ehhh...

No.

It actually stands for the socket. "J" processors are socket 775.

well all 5series are 775 and only 5x1 models have 64bit

That's funny. Intel's sockets even baffle the techs. I can only imagine what the common man thinks when he hears one of these CPU names.

*Edit* Maybe the "J" stands for "J-Lo Edition", and they come with a special fragrance that you can spray on your CPU. :Q

The P4 3.2 and the 540 are pretty much the same cpu as far as I know, the only difference being the first is s478 and the second is lga775.
The s478 model was never marketed as 5xx, if you saw a s478 called 5xx that was most probably the retailer calling it so, perhaps in an attempt to make it easier for customers to choose ? (if both cpus are 540 the customer has only to choose the socket).

Here is a model table:

P4 xx speed - s478 cpus
P4 5xx/6xx - 775 single cores
P4 8xx - 775 dual cores

The second number usually denotes the speed, 2 is for 2.8ghz, 3 for 3.0, 4 for 3.2 etc etc
This can be helpful as a model number can say more about a cpu than just a speed rating (ex: 540 vs 640, same speed diff cache).

The only thing that confused me was the J on the 5series, but now thats clear as well
