5400 RPM v. 7200 RPM

For laptops, performance wise, is there a significant difference between the two when comparing two hard drives with the same capacity?

Depends on the drive, some 5400 drives are quick and some 7200 drives are dogs. See www.storagereview.com benchmarks.

I don't think the performance improvement is enough to warrant a huge price premium. I do know that the 7200RPM drives draw a bit more power than the 5400, but not too significant.

So for a Macbook Pro, the difference between the 5400RPM and the 7200 RPM, both with 160GB space, is negligible?

Nope..the 7K200 wipes the floor clean for 2.5" SATA performance. Its even faster then the seagate 7200.2 by quite a margin.

I just replaced a Hitachi 160 GB 2.5/5400 drive in my Thinkpad T60 with a Hitachi 200 GB 2.5/7200. I cloned the 160 to the 200 then swapped the drives.

Aside from more storage space, the boot/load time for the exact same Vista Ultimate OS is consistently 25 seconds faster for the 7200 than for the 5400. Of note is the fact that both are SATA, and the 200 GB drive has a 16 MB cache while the 160 has a 8 MB cache.

I like it so much I'm ordering another to have as a reserve HDD for the T60.

really old 7200 might get beat by a newer 5400rpm i guess.
platter bit density on newer drives makes them faster u see.
newer 7200rpm migth be as efficient as an old 5400rpm

don't buy old junk

I'm planning to get a 7k200 and was wondering what your temps are like? I'm planning to put it into a hp dv2500t. Is it going to run too hot?

I was also thinking this 5400 rpm drive:

Western Digital Scorpio WD2500BEVS 250GB 5400 RPM Serial ATA150 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

But both seems to have the same power specs.

No noticeable temp difference in my T60 after replacing 5400 with 7200.

temp doesn't seem to matter that much according to the google drive study.
