I still like to keep one around for the few times my cable goes out. The modem and a Netzero account can feed my online addiction.

I agree with HotshoT69, the PCTel modem is not worth 9.99. You're much better off with this Ambient/Intel based offering over at Newegg. Many hours fielding tech calls at the local ISP have fueled my hatred for PCTel products.

Uh, some people don't spend as much time on the comp as you do.
There are people who take 30 minutes once a month, with their NetZero account, to check their email and print directions:Q.

On the review page of that product, there's some dude that said he bought over 200 of them and didn't have a single problem

what exactly is it about that modem that doesn't let them connect?

my uncle has an emachines too, and I cannot for the life of me connect using it my local ISP. The modem works for AOL fine, but simply will not work for NetZero or my local ISP... I called tech support, 2 hours, couldn't figure it out. Perhaps you can shed some light?

PCTel is an HSP ("host signal processing") modem. The short version is that it's a glorified telephone wire adapter for your computer, your PC does pretty much all the rest. This is no longer as bad as it used to be (they hit the market back when Pentium 150/16 megs was a "powerhouse" and you could actually see the mouse stutter and skip across the desktop when you connected), but the device still uses up cpu cycles and memory that's better used elsewhere. 9.99 isn't terrible, but there are better modems (LTwin, HCF, etc) for the same or not much more.

At a guess, it's more difficult to connect to a local provider because whatever you are using to connect to them (DUN or their proprietary software) doesn't have million character init string that AOL throws at it to force it to 1. connect under all but no signal circumstances 2. report 57600+ speed regardless of actual speed. In other words, you may want to look up the current strings to slow the "modem" down to 33.6 (or lower) speeds to see if it connects more reliably to the local ISP.

OOS

(out of stock)
a lot of my customers still use modems - especially the older ones on fixed incomes. if it's not wired through a surge protector, i'll be out there replacing them. cheap modems are always good (especially without MIR).

http://www.mrtechus.com/lucent56kv90.html

This place has a Lucent (Agere) winmodem for $7.50 with free shipping. I've always had the best luck with Lucent Winmodem. XP will have excellent built in drivers. Even ME has good drivers built in.

http://www.mrtechus.com/inchip56kv92.html These Intel Winmodems are also OK. Same deal as the Lucent. I would pick Lucent over Intel, and I would pick both of these by a country mile of PC Tel, which have always given me trouble.

Not sure about the above store, but ResellerRatings wasn't horrible.
