5700 Ultra or 9600XT?

Looking for a good video card for about $150. I don't intend to overclock. I'm a gamer, but it's not my purpose in life (no offense). I'd like a good card that will run most of today's games well, but I don't have to be on the cutting edge.

Are either of these cards decent, and if so, which would you go with and why?

Thanks

newegg.com Neither, I own a 5700u, and although its a great card, the card I gave you in that link is better, and for $10 dollars more its a LOT better. good luck

I have a 9600XT and it runs all the games I play fine (FarCry, UT2K3/4, BF1942). I can even put the settings on high. I OC'ed it to 570/650 (stock cooling, no worries), and the extra boost really seems to help out. The 5900XT is a better card, if you want to spend the extra $20. Although I will say that for about $175 you could get a 9800pro which would blow the 5900XT away. So if your budget is $150, get the 9600XT. If you want to spend a few dollars more, look for a bulk 9700pro/9800pro.

I agree with Sneaky Stuff,

I have a 9700pro 9600pro and 5900xt and the xt is right in between my 9700pro and 9600pro in terms of performance... the image quality that most ATI(FREAKS) will talk about is not as noticable as the Frames Per Second. and That is one smoken price on that card i paid $215 from newegg 6 months ago.

I hope I didn't screw up because I just bought the Chaintech 5900XT for $169 from NewEgg?

good job That's the one, you're going to be VERY happy with it. By the way, what are the specs of your system?

The 9800 pros are not $179, those are cripppled 128bit versions.

msmith you made a good buy. It's difficult to argue against a 5900XT at that price.

The only way you might do a little better would be to get something used.

If you want to try later on, that 5900XT should overclock well, too.

5900XT's overclock to 5900 levels, just to let you know, you could give it some more juice later on when games like DoomIII and Half Life 2 come out

I actually don't have a system yet, as I'm in the process of building it. I am going to get an AMD Athlon64 3000+ cpu (haven't selected the motherboard yet), with probably 512MB ram, and a 120GB Seagate IDE with 8MB cache disk drive. Should the 5900XT run well on this system?

Thanks much!

don't worry, for $170 that 5900xt is a FANTASTIC deal. Consider it more money towards something else

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. A penny saved on the video card means a penny I can spend elsewhere

Should have made a deal for it. The 5900XT does nothing compared to a 9700pro.

EDIT: And look here, take a game like HALO, something ATI usually always beats nvidia in, the 5900xt seems to hold its own against the 9700 pro. vga roundup
