I just installed a GeForce 5800 Ultra that I finally received; I had pre-ordered it back in mid Feb.

Anyway, I have tried it with Battlefield 1942, Delta Force Black Hawk Down, UT2003, and Unreal2, and all are virtually unplayable now?
I get a massive amount of artifacts in the game like huge pillars stretching across the map or going straight up in to the sky. I get bizarre long jagged spikes coming out of what ever weapon I am holding, I get huge sections of blank areas on some maps.

There are so many artifacts and anomalies in these games I can't hardly see to move around and makes them unplayable. I did not plunk down my hard earned money and had a long wait for a big mess. I don?t know if its driver related or if I received a bad card either way I am screwed because I can't play.

Anyone seen this? Is there a fix?

where'd you get the card from? contact them and/or a tech line they could have

could be a driver problem. what drivers are you using?

oh yea, btw, how loud is it?

It's a PNY Technologies Verto card, I got it from MicroPro.com, so far I have tried the 40.51 that came with the card, the 43.00's from PNY's Site and the latest 43.45's from Guru3D .com. All the drivers give me the same result, massive artifacts in massive amounts!

At least its not very loud to me any way but I have eight fans in my box so I am used to fan hum so maybe it would be loud for others.

I wish it was that easy, it says AGP4X in the adapter description under display properties and that?s what I have.

It sounds like a faulty card to me,the only way to be sure is to get a replacement. You could try it in a different PC,also Driver Cleaner 1.3 is worth a shot to remove all traces of drivers and then do another clean driver install, but my guess is the card.

Btw I hope you`ve a decent PSU?

Also make sure nothing is overclocked, that includes CPU.

I have a 460watt PS so that should not be a problem, I will try the driver cleaner program and do a clean driver install and see if that will work.

Thanks

I think I have narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because OpenGL games like Quake3 and Serious Sam work fine.

I am running DirectX 9a any one else have problems with 9a and GeForce Cards?

Yes it should, just in case I tried it on a another system running DX9 not 9a and had the same bad results, so it has to be hardware related.

Strange Anomilies are not the only bad thing about the 5800 Ultra either;

Before I removed it from my system and put my old card back in I ran some bench mark tests and it was about the same maybe a tad slower on some then my old GeForce 4600 and much slower than the ATI 9700 Pro. I used the Autobench program which auto runs several benchmarks like 3dmark SE, Quake3, Serious Sam SE, and others.

Here are some results, note that due to apparent hardware problems with the 5800 Ultra these results might not be accurate: All at 1024x768 res on identical systems
Quake 3
9700Pro 353.7 fps
5800 Ultra 376.7 fps

Serious Sam SE
9700 Pro 71.4 FPS
5800 Ultra 77.8 FPS

3Dmark SE
9700 Pro 11568
5800 Ultra 10873

UT 2003
9700 Pro
flyby - 143.710186 botmatch - 48.622913

5800 Ultra
1024x768 flyby - 139.102844 botmatch - 48.075346

Vulpine GLmark
9700 Pro 61.6 fps
5800 Ultra 56.8 fps

Simple: bigger badder and better performance!

Plus when I upgrade my whole family upgrades, my brother get the 4600, my brother in-law gets my brothers Geforce 3 which was my old card and my father gets my brother in-laws Geforce 2 which was my old old card and my fathers TNT2 gets retired which was my old old old card.

I got a 5800 Ultra thanks to Thugsrook and have not experienced any of those problems you mention. I have played practically all those games and they run great. In fact I really like this card, let's see what happens when my 9800 pro gets here tomorrow.

Did you uninstall your old drivers before swapping cards? If not then you should've.

Yes I did un-install my old drivers not that it mattered because the card that was in there before it was a Geforce 4 4600
using the latest 43.45 drivers that work for the 5800 as well.

In any case I have concluded it's a hardware issue and I am sending it back, hopefully they will give me a refund so I can get the 9800 Pro.

Not questioning, just wondering: Why do you have to un-install the Detonator Drivers when you install another Nvidia card? Don't they have that unified-driver thingie?

So you`re saying it works ok in OpenGL but not in D3D?

Try going into the Nvidia display panel and play with the D3D FSAA and AA settings, try them at off & max settings etc ,see if it makes any difference?

Also you can check your refresh rate override settings in there as well.

Normally you don`t need to change drivers, however if you go from a brand driver ie PNY,Leadtek etc...it`s best to remove them if you install the standard Nvidia reference drivers.
Also even when you upgrade your Nvidia drivers to a newer Nvidia version the best way is to remove the old Nvidia drivers first.

Thats my excuse for upgrading too

Anyways, Id email Nvidia and ask them wth is going on with it and what you should do about it.

Might be worth a format and full OS install again. At least it keeps you going

ummm... I just bought a new dell 2.66ghz/R9700 TX for about $200 more then what you paid for your single video card. Straight out I got a 13000 3Dmark score without any tweaking so far.

no offense but this desire to have the newest and "baddest" usually begets problems like this. I typically don't buy the newest thing out there not because it's super expensive (which does suck of course) but to avoid those v1.0 problems. To pay a buttload only to be a ginea pig does not appeal to me. Besides the games you will need a 5800 for won't be out until the 5800 price probably drops significantly or a newer technology will be out anyways.

Well regardless, seems you have done alot on the software end. Good luck RMAing it. Hope you get a 9800 or a new machine or whatever you need
