Just stick to your 5850, its an excellent card especially when overclocked.

Dumb question here: for CF, is it necessary to use the exact same card (chipset & manufacturer) or is it good enough to ensure both cards use the same chipset & RAM amount?

It's not necessary to have two identical cards you can even mismatch cards. For example 5850+5870 in CF will work just fine, albeit at a performance level of 5850CF.

OP is that monitor 3d capable

It is 3D capable but i will not be using it for 3d. It is the Acer GD235HZbid. Got it strictly for 2d @ 120hz 1080p

I've never done a multigpu setup, but I just now started to browse around prices on 5850's and it actually might be a decent idea to pick up a 2nd. Can get recerts/open box/used for $120ish, new $150ish. Thats not too bad really. I just fear if and when I go to dump the cards off for a nextgen gpu i'll be regretting the purchase.

I'm digging around for some OCing information atm, unless someone can link me to the ez-peezy guide.

The kind of sad thing is I work at a retailer, but my discount seems to be borderline terrible on video cards. Online almost always beats me by $30 on whatever i price check. Makes me sad

He said that because he's trying to dethrone a happy medium person as #1 Nvidia faboi supreme....hence his silly suggestion of spending ludicrous amounts of money when spending very little money CF'ing another 5850, as OC mentioned doing among others, will do as well.

At your gaming resolution and dual monitoring you will need 2gb video ram one way or another.
5850's are $149 at newegg but a lot of ppl including me are happy with a shader unlocked 6950 2gb that can overclock with afterburner/trixx/etc. to 6970 levels.
But from what I understand the newer non-reference 6950's cannot be unlocked easily.

he's only gaming on one monitor. 1gb vram is fine.

Dual 5850's seems to be the way to go. The only thing I think might be a problem is BF3. The 6950 has more v-ram, performs better in DX11 mode and if you can unlock the shaders, it might be better equipped to handle that game.
