5850 to R290

I am going to upgrade my lovely 5850 to R290.

Currently, I have I7-2600K, 32GB of RAM and Antec 850W PSU.

I am not a gamer, but I do enjoy playing both old and new titles.

I am waiting for R290 to get custom coolers, when will those be available?

Also, I am sure that the improvement will be huge, but how much exactly let's say in Crysis1???

I would like to game in 2560x1440 but my current 5850 requires lower resolutions/quality to get playable frame rates in newer titles.

Crysis1 is terribly coded, and will still be CPU limited in many respects.

For more modern titles? Will be ludicrous improvement, beyond gigantic.

I'd even say that in many cases you'll see 5x or even more improvement at 1440P.

I don't think you will really see much difference in Crysis 1. It's an old game and a 5850 is sufficient enough to max it out. However, in new titles, you will see a huge difference in performance and you should be able to max them out without any issues. If you get fps drops, that may be because of your CPU. You should consider OCing it because your CPU will bottleneck your new graphics card.

My opinion: pick a R9 290 or a GTX 780 AMP!.

No, 5850 is just not enough for Crysis 1 especially in 2560x1440.

I'll definitely replay it once I get x290.

Also, Crysis 1 was just one example of older game. I am looking forward to playing new games as well.


Anyone knows when we'll be able to get x290 with custom coolers?

5850 is not enoug for crysis 1 (not for maxed out anyway) , I'm also waiting for custom 290's to be released so my trusty old 5850 can be replaced.

I'm getting the feeling we won't see custom 290 untill next year

Thinking about getting a reference card and give it a try inside my fractal define r4 case. If the noise is ok, i'll keep it + hot air blowing outside the case.

If the noise is too loud i'm going to try the hybrid way (arctic or kraken g10) = silent/cool, but more expensive.

I'm getting mixed opinions about the noise level of reference. I won't overclock at first and i'm still gaming at 1080p.

Bitcoin? Probably not. Litecoin, definitely!

A 5850 is comparable to a 7850 in terms of crunching power. So you should be able to sell your 5850 for at least 60-70 bucks.

However, they probably won't be in very high demand because running one of them solo would be a waste of the system. Most miners prefer to run 2 or 3 cards.

Just ordered a Sapphire R9 290 - €349.
If it's too loud I'll upgrade it with a Arctic Accelero Hybrid, bought with youtube-money :biggrin:
