Nope, your memories are cheating on you. 4870X2 was announced at $550 in late Agugst but took weeks to ship and it went almost immediately down to almost $500 and as soon as 4850X2 debuted (announced at $400) and also immediately fell down to $350 the 4870X2 fell further, below $500 by the ned of the year, within 2 months. By January you could get a 4870X2 for $450 in most places.
BTW it's a serious recession if not a depression out there - and it's hitting other countries even harder. ATI has no choice but lower its prices if it really wants to move a lot of cards and that would help their market share numbers which, in turn, would help their stock as well.
I stand by my prediction: 5870X2 2GB for $500, 4850 X2 2GB for $400, 5870 for $300 and ~$220 5850 in November, when Christmas season starts.
If I'm right then count me (w/ my friends) in for few $5850 X2 2GBs, AMD.

Do you guys think this slide is authentic? (although prices might be high at release)
399 and 599 for 5850 x2 and 5870 x2 respectively. why would anyone buy 5870 ?
the price difference is just 50$. I'm considering waiting for 5850 x2.(oct-nov this year).

How does any of that negate my comment of the 4870X2 being launched at $550? Honestly people, think before you type.Originally posted by: T2k

The enthusiast segment means very little in the scheme of things. When NVIDIA has some actual competition for ATI's current line up, then you'll probably see prices falls. Considering that 5870's were sold out as fast as they were restocked for the first couple of days of the 5870 launch, there's plenty of people out their with disposable income.Originally posted by: T2kBTW it's a serious recession if not a depression out there - and it's hitting other countries even harder. If the 5870 drops to $300 by November (which, without competition, probably won't happen), you might see a 5870X2 launch at $500, not likely though. No business is going to try to outsell itself.Originally posted by: T2kI stand by my prediction: 5870X2 2GB for $500, 4850 X2 2GB for $400, 5870 for $300 and ~$220 5850 in November, when Christmas season starts.

I give up - I thought you can understand English but you simply pick and choose segments out of full sentences then argue with yourself.
Well, have fun.

I disagree a lot of this depends on what Nvidia comes up with... or how they decrease their prices. ATI would never decrease the prices if the competition is not there.

ati only lowers their prices to keep sales volumes reasonable. If nvidia comes out with a killer gt300 before xmas but it doesn't dent ati sales then why on earth would they decrase prices? Now, I agree that a good gt300 will be very LIKELY to cause ati to lower prices, but it will depend on gt300 prices vs rv8xx prices, right?

I wonder how many power connectors this card will need.
According to one rumor site HD5870x2 uses 376 watts. That is one too many watts for even a mighty set of dual 8 pin power connectors.
Throw in Overclocking and we are talking three power connectors per card? (two 8 pin and a 6 pin). Luckily those 1+ kilowatt PSU seem to come with a redundant number of PCI-E power connectors.
