These cards are coming into stock more often, and staying there for longer now.

At some point the emergency 'must get' reflex and the 'at any price' snagging will go by the wayside.

He he I can already feel it receding. When it first came out I was thinking "$599 - F that!" Then, as Fermi became more and more of a distant dream I started to become ok with that price. By that time it had shot up quite considerably and I might have even considered $650, but now I'm cooling off. I'm sure this exact situation is described somewhere in my intermediate microeconomics textbook.

That price if $479 for the 5870 is nuts. That is supposed to be a $379-399 card. I hope no one is buying them for that much, although I know people are.

edit: I wouldn't trust mwave's "in stock" either. I ordered a supposedly in stock 7900GTX from them years ago, and they totally didn't have it. They gave me some run around about having to verify my shipping/billing address (when they matched) for two days and still didn't ship it. Eventually, I got a rep on the phone that admitted they just didn't have the card in stock. I don't even think the card was hard to find at the time, but mwave had the best price. Not worth the hassle, I stick with the egg or ZZF now.

Wonder if there is a connection?

my scientific wild ass guess is that if the 5800 series cards continue to be available online we'll see some drastic price cuts after Christmas.

Well, drastic in the sense that they'll go back down to what they were in September.. maybe lower but I'm not too sure about that. When Fermi comes out there will be more price drops.

Just installed my 5870. It's a monster, especially compared to my old nvidia 8800 whatever it was.

Speaking of which, my HIS 5970 showed up yesterday. Only had to pay $580 for it, through work. Hopefully I will get a chance to play with it this weekend.

compared to the 4870x2 - http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2584/4172911757_c970efe09a_b.jpg

Installed in a Antec 900-Two and it fits - http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2620/4172912149_3d02b2fe4c_b.jpg

Holy cow, that brings me back to when I had the Antec 900. Great case, but atrocious amounts of filthy dust accumulated in it. I'm really glad they started putting dust filters on the 1200. I've cleaned off enough cat hair from those filters to make a cat hair jacket, which I plan on wearing during X-mas break.

Anyways, I have noticed that the 5870's have solidly been in stock for about 3 days now at newegg.

Hasn't trickled up to the 5970's yet, but some of the cards are saying "ETA 12/15/2009."

According to this article it was going to be late November or early December when we see higher numbers of Radeon 5xxx series released. Specifically it was said to be be raised from "thousands a week" to "tens of thousands a week" which would be a substantial increase. At least a two fold increase in supply. I'm sure that that's what we're seeing right now.

I don't see prices dropping any time soon, this is the holiday shopping season but likely in January the prices will drop down to MSRP and likely lower than MSRP by the time Fermi is released.

Yeah. Next mobo/cpu upgrade will involve a new case.

The fans manage to pull dust through every available orifice.

Got some Dirt 2 in with all the video options turned up. Very nice (graphics and stuff, not so much the game). Now that everything is installed and running, I'm much more tempted to load Crysis up.

Seriously though, Newegg seems like such a lumbering giant at this point in time when supply is just starting to catch up with demand. Second-tier retailers must rejoice at such an easy target with to take customers from. Just have a sale comparing your price to Newegg...$40 less!! (still MSRP plus a healthy markup), advertise, then watch the business start rolling in from the droves of people whose first point of comparison is the Newegg price. Newegg is so big they probably don't even notice (or care) for weeks.

I'm going to keep my eyes peeled in the hot deals section. I learned about a lot of reputible, second tier on-line sites when I shopped for my second Intel G2 SSD.

<old pic of himself, back from the time when his batte with slight mental disability just started>

I guess some people are simply too busy posting retarded pics to recognize that I have my 5870 already here, in my machine... well, losers are losers, can't help them, can I?

Last warning. Lay off the personal attacks. In case it is not clear to you what those types of things are, I've bolded them above for you.
Next time will be vacation time.
