US dollar deflation.

6900K for $599 would be huge, a $400 cheaper 8-core. Reminds me of the good old days when Q6600 fell from $850 to $530, and then to $266.

I hope we see the Intel 8-core drop down to $389-399 by 2018-2019.

I think at $599, a lot of enthusiasts would be very interested in an 8 core 6900K. It will also make it much harder for those who are "holding out for Zen" to actually wait, especially if the 6900K proves a potent overclocker

Well, Intel did give you more for the money with 5820K. Will they do the same for BW-E as well. I seriously doubt it, unless Zen offers some serious competition. I expect 1199.00 at least for the 10 core, 999.00 still for the 8 core, 390 for the lowest hex core, maybe 500 for the upper level hex core.

Why does Zen matter here? Intel needs to entice people to upgrade/buy new systems and I think that offering more value at the same price point is the right way to go, especially in light of the die shrink they'll get at 14nm.

Yep, Zen is irrelevant.

460$ is quite a deal!

I wonder if this is an attempt to push the enthusiast upwards, since 6700K and 4790K is getting in low supply.

If intel *really* wanted to entice people to upgrade, they could make i7 mainstream hex core, i5 hyperthread quad, i3 quad, pentium hyperthreaded dual core and celeron what pentium is now. More value at every price point across the board. And reserve X99 for 8 and 10 cores.

I doubt that would make people upgrade at all. And I am sure people at Intel have laid out the prospects for any case.

You would simply move people down the ladder in many cases. Instead of an i3 they buy a Pentium and so on.

For the mainstream platform it really is better to put more iGPU grunt and integrate other stuff, since these chips are mainly for laptops.

For HEDT, which comes from server land, more cores is the best way to spend those transistors, IMO.

Pretty interesting that this chip just saw a huge price cut. I suspect this is a clue as to what Broadwell-E pricing will look like. My latest guess:

6800K - $390
6850K - $460
6900K - $599
6950X - $999

I would hope that 6800K would drop in price.

$389 was the price for the i7-5820K. so I would hope for $299 to $349 for 6800K (since it is now a fourth tier X99 CPU).

P.S. i7 3820 (lowest end Sandy bridge consumer LGA 2011 processor ) was listed at $299 tray price (and although it had a locked multiplier it was overclockable via strap)

I will buy the $599 6900K. I'm still skeptical it will actually be $599, however.

I'm leaning that way myself. I think the speculated pricing is just too good to be true, though I won't object if it IS true.

I'm wondering that myself. If that pricing is accurate, the 6700K just doesn't make sense.

If the 6 core chip is just over $300, I wouldn't splurge on a 8 core chip for $600. Basically 33% more performance for almost double the cost. I'm too frugal. It would have to be about $450 for me to bite. Perhaps another generation or two...

Maybe the price is down because as it turns out, the extra lanes are not really worth that much more money.
