If only we could break them in half and have two useable cards. Maybe then we could solve the supply problems, lol.

It has lower power consumption then GTX 295. Didn't expected that. They could have probably went further with the GPU and memory clocks. It's a nice card, still having some driver issues though.
Does anyone remembers what was the last 600$ ATI videocard?

looks like they managed to lop off a whole 1 inch from the design that Alienbabeltech was showing earlier.

still is going to make my options for my next rig a PITA

The Radeon 5970 HIS box reminds me of the Bitchinfast 3D video card...

The lower memory and GPU core clocks do seem to be affecting its performance as evidenced by it being beaten by two 5870's.

It's showing very solid gains but I'm not that impressed with it vs the GTX295. Perhaps I was expecting too much from the Radeon 5xx0 series as a whole. I was really hoping for something to convince me to upgrade from my Radeon 4870.

I may still upgrade but only because a friend is looking for a new mid-range computer for gaming in the next couple of months and I can unload my video card on him. Most of my video card upgrades have occurred when a friend is getting a new computer or video card and I can upgrade by unloading my current video card on them. Makes my actual upgrade costs cheaper. Usually when I buy a new card without unloading the old is because I get a very substantial boost in power.

I think this is the first video card ever produced that absolutely wouldn't fit into my case unless I busted out the Dremel!

Vaporware.

Fermi is vaporware as well. Note that this is not a knock on Fermi or any other Fermi derived part. I just feel that screaming vaporware on a part that is, barring a catastrophe, going to be released is just asinine. If there was significant doubt that we would ever see a Radeon 5970 that would be different and you can call it vaporware. The question is who on this board, even those with green glasses, feel that there is a high chance that the Radeon 5970 will never see a retail release?

Why no 2560 tests?
Also, take a look at the Farcry 2 results:
http://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/articles/view.php?id=3072&cid=3&pg=5
Why is 5870x2 so much faster (almost double) at 1920 compared to the 5970 (actually come to think of it they're getting way more than double a 5870...maybe a game bug?)? Maybe they're reusing numbers from a different test which had a different system config?

That slipped past me but that is indeed strange. Might be driver issues or a game bug.

Fermi derivative GPU parts haven't even been announced, no benchmarks have been released, and nvidia hasn't even mentioned what kinds of cards are coming to the GPU gaming segment. I'm annoyed and pissed with this situation too because I'd like to have all next gen parts out to compete for my money, but since nvidia isn't talking about their parts it's not vaporware. It's nothing-ware.

The 5970, though, has been talked about, alluded to, and given a set release date. We're getting benchmarks, the date is upon us, and there will be how many for sale? 10? 15? There are massive production issues right now with 40nm at TSMC. AMD can't deliver their 5850's or 5870 with any significant supply. This card will be even more scarce. I guess it's fun to talk about, but there will be more reviews of this card on the net than there will be actual paid-for owners of this card by the year's end. What is the point of releasing this card right now if they can't even make enough of their other just-released parts?

Too bad they didn't leave the clocks matching the 5870... I also find it unfortunate that they didn't use the HD5870X2 notation. Would be much easier to know it's two 5870s on one board.

10? 15? No. I'm gonna guess that supply with the etailers will be OK for a few days... AMD's probably been allocating a portion of the TSMC yield in anticipation this launch for a while. Once the initial flush of cards dries up, however, finding a 5970 will be just like finding anything else rv870 based.

Everyone is getting the shaft from TSMC right now... AMD, nVidia, consumers... they want to produce stuff, we want to buy it. But here we are.

If they had left it as 5870x2 and then you would get significantly less performance than 2x 5870, you can bet people would be pissed.

I think it was a reasonable move - you can expect it to be faster than the 5870 but doesn't say anything to how it compares to 2x 5870 CF.

It's showing very solid gains but I'm not that impressed with it vs the GTX295.

It's like saying you aren't very impressed with the performance of a 4-banger to a V8, even when the V8 passes the line only a tenth of a second before the 4-banger.

ATi hasn't announced the 5970. They haven't announced a set release date. You are dreaming all of this.

It has been talked about but that is from people on the internet. Benchmarks are around but did ATi sanction them? Are they even real?

The most that anyone could claim coming directly from ATi is some slides that show a dual gpu card would be released.

As for TSMC, you have no idea what their output is like right now. Neither do it. It is all speculation. You posting that their will be only 10 or 15 released is silly. Your entire post was silly.

Is it just me, or does that look pretty much the same size as HD5870? If so: well done AMD; cramming in an extra GPU and CrossfireX-chip on a tad bigger PCB (it's either that or HD5870 has a much too large PCB).

HardOCP states that they'll be going live with their 5970 review at 11PM CDT... so, in about 45 minutes.
