That probably was me. Last year on Ubuntu 9.xx, there were no issues running the linux smp client. With the new distro releases of Ubuntu 10.xx and other distros, there have been problems. Fortunately there a a lot of linux gurus that support F@H that have been able to work around those problems. It looks like a recent release of libc on Ubuntu linux 10.04 has broken the smp client again so I rebooted into Win7 and ran the apps there. The F@H linux app is compiled using static libraries and therein lies the problem. All the other DC linux apps are compiled using dynamic libraries and I've never had problems running them. Apparently F@H doesn't have the resources to fully support linux and have focused on Windows as a platform.

You can however, run both Windows GPU clients and the smp client under Wine in linux. I will test both in the near future.

filibusterman, you can run the smp client on a dual core but you may not finish before the WU deadline.

I'm still on 9.04, so I tried running the same client I ran last year:
[17:27:35] - Connecting to assignment server
[17:27:35] Connecting to http://assign.stanford.edu:8080/
[17:27:37] Posted data.
[17:27:37] Initial: 0000; + No appropriate work server was available; will try again in a bit.
[17:27:37] + Couldn't get work instructions.
[17:27:37] - Attempt #1 to get work failed, and no other work to do.
Waiting before retry.
[17:27:45] + Attempting to get work packet
[17:27:45] - Will indicate memory of 2048 MB
[17:27:45] - Connecting to assignment server
[17:27:45] Connecting to http://assign.stanford.edu:8080/
[17:27:46] Posted data.
[17:27:46] Initial: 0000; + No appropriate work server was available; will try again in a bit.
[17:27:46] + Couldn't get work instructions.
[17:27:46] - Attempt #2 to get work failed, and no other work to do.
Waiting before retry.
Do I have to upgrade something?

Edit: Solved - just had to upgrade to 6.29 from 6.24beta.

Edit2: The Linux SMP client appears to have significant system overhead - about 1/3 of 1 processor. I wonder if the Windows client under Wine would do better?

I believe I was not putting the -smp flag after the fah6 in the terminal. I have since done this and it appears to be giving me appropriate a3 wu.

Thanks! I put it together from public-domain images to be a Gravatar; but then I found out that Gravatar doesn't allow the usernames Ken_g6, Ken g6, or KenG6! :|

Maybe...I've got Q6600s@3GHz, one running the Windows client and the other running the linux client so eventually I can compare performance.

filibusterman, thanks for the link to fix the Ubuntu 10.09 problem. As it turns out, it also fixed the 10.04 problem on my machines.

TBH, F@H on Windows has a clear advantage. I've got a Windows 7 machine with 2 GTX460s running and the GPUs only use 1-2% of CPU at most and the GPU cores are 95%+. Very impressive.

I can hear the engines revving up now…………

The PC industry ought to give us an award for the spike in parts they are about to get. ^_^

Me too, over the last few months. I think petrusbroder has some impressive new hardware too!

Where's Assimilator1? Has he signed up for the race yet? :whiste:

Maybe Sid will check in after Turkey Day?

I spent $1300 just for this

You've got me beat. I picked up two GTX460 1GB cards, and a couple of PSUs.

I'm thinking about upgrading my quad-GPU cruncher with some GTS450s, once Sparkle releases their single-slot version. Probably have to upgrade the PSU too then.

What did you order? or is it a trade secret?

As for me, I've only spent $130 so far.

AX1200 Corsair PSU, 4 x 460 GTX cards, I7 950, AX850 Corsair PSU

I don't even have all the hardware yet, it won't even be coming online until after the 1st probably, since I have to get the system stable, and it won't be here until the 29th !

(2 of those cards go in another system)

I think it may take me over 200k ppd....

Anyone a Intel Retail Edge member? Nice holiday deal coming up on Dec 1. i7 970 for $215 though you need to be Rockstar status to be eligible. Fantastic price for a folding CPU. Overclocked to 4 GHz with -bigadv, the CPU should net just a hair under 50k PPD. With some luck, I'm hoping to be able to toss this 12 thread monster mid-month into the race.

Looking to get a GTS450 for the race. Just waiting to see if I can get one for under $100. Missed the opportunity to grab the Gigabyte one at Newegg before they bumped the price up $10.

After a VERY long time away from F@H (and the DC TeAm in general) the time has come to ramp back up. Not sure how many of you remember me... except maybe Petrusbroder who I had lunch with in Stockholm some years back

Looks like I am able to pull down 4,000 PPD on F@H the last 3 days, I may be able to increase this some. Any spots left on teams?

Good find. I was looking at all of their cards too and didn't see this one for some reason.
Order placed as a gift to myself for having passed my state property and casualty producer license exam. I can now sell myself random insurance policies...

what ppd do you get with it? isn't a gtx460 cheaper per ppd?

My PPD will be...higher. :sneaky: That's just from test runs. Edit: Let's just say I'll probably be above GLeeM's current position.

Also, I've noticed that recent GPU work gives a lot less PPD than some older work. I think a lot of those PPD values might be influenced by that.
