because my 6MT in the same car smokes the auto version and gets better gas mileage and is 8x as fun to drive specially at the track or in the hills?

G35 Coupe BTW

G35's are slow so it doesn't matter.

I hope the world goes to DCTs.
Manuals are completely outclassed by them, I'd imagine its the nostalgia keeping the hardcores driving them.
The second they make my bike in an automatic, I'm switching.

This, I like driving manuals on occasion as I'm stuck with a slushbox, but meld the best of both worlds - double clutch with auto mode for traffic, and precise shifts on the open roads.

I don't have an obsession with the clutch pedal like most do.

Really? Because I just started driving last year, and have only owned manuals. And even in the cars I've owned/driven, they've been a hell of a lot of fun. Autos bore me.

I don't know what DCT stands for but I assume robotic flappy paddle non-slushbox transmission.

They may be faster but you lose the fun of the clutch and shifter. It's like playing baseball with an automatic bat that you swing by pressing a button. Yes you will score a lot of home runs but it's not fun.

It's not surprising. Most driving schools these days don't keep manual cars in their fleets. Nobody learns how to drive stick.

The whole auto vs manual debate is a lot like the Xbox vs PS3, or Mac vs PC argument. Both have their strengths and drawbacks. Automatic is superior for city driving. Manual is better for open road and hilly driving, or hauling.

One big bonus if manual ever makes a comeback...it might stop people from texting while driving.

Clutch isn't *that* fun, and if they made double clutches with paddle shifters AND standard hand shifters, that would be ideal.

You use the paddle shifters because you want both hands on the wheel. And that's only necessary when you're having fun off the streets. You can have your fun with your right hand with the standard on street. And switch to Auto in stop and go traffic.

Not nostalgia, but enjoyment.

Also, people these days are crappy drivers because cars have turned into appliances. If it doesn't take much presence of mind to operate a car, then why would anyone have to pay attention?

Dual clutch transmission?

They may be faster but you lose the fun of the clutch and shifter. It's like playing baseball with an automatic bat that you swing by pressing a button. Yes you will score a lot of home runs but it's not fun.

Great analogy!

I will continue to buy manuals until they stop offering them or my legs can't handle them anymore.

It took me 3 months to get my manual after having order my car to spec. I couldn't believe I could not find a 4 door sedan outside of Subaru that had a manual in stock. Audi didn't have any, neither did Infiniti or BMW.

It was worth the wait though.

Well it isn't all bad guys......that just means there are less people than can actually get it to move if they try to steal it

Kidding aside this is kinda depressing though. I must be in a tiny minority, as all of the cars I've ever owned (300ZX TT, 240SX and my Legacy GT.....actually still have all 3, worth more to me than what I could sell them for) are all manuals.

Actually, I take back the worth more to me than I can sell them for....someone offered me 7 grand for my 240 and planned to gut it and prep it for a drag strip...it just seemed like such a waste a beautifully handling car for something a mustang or f-body would work so much better for....besides, it's only one of like 10 that are concord gray SE's with the VLSD a manual and no sunroof...which I realize doesn't mean anything but I just like my toys so back off

I've said it before and I'll say it again, you can have my manual when you pry it out of my cold dead hand. I'll happily take the reliable simplicity of a manual over the expensive complexity of a automatic any day. The newer DSG dual clutch trans are just another more expensive hand grenade waiting to cost you, not the $2k a honda does, but the $15k the gtr does, enjoy the repair bills morons.

Little story that I'm actually a bit embarrassed about but I'll tell anyways...

Was at a Little Caeser's, not too long before I got my license (I think). Was driving my mom's car, automatic Trailblazer. Nothing against the vehicle BTW, it's great. Anyways, it is on an incline, so you have to give it gas to get out obviously. So I throw it in reverse and go to step on the gas- or so it thought. Apparently, somehow, I either pulled it to far or not far enough and put it in D. So when I went to hit the gas, I ended up going forward - ran a bit up onto the curb, and almost knocked into one of their huge pillars outside the place. I have quick reaction (or did then), so luckily I was able to brake quickly, but regardless, I was pretty scared and my mom was too (and pissed).

To give a quick conclusion, with a manual, this wouldn't have happened. When shifting, I know where I am. I know what gear I'm in, where that gear is, and where I need to shift at. Granted, I might still roll back and forth sometimes depending on the incline I'm on, but I'll know where I am and know where my friction point is on my clutch to where I can hold it without the brake and get a quicker non-rolling start.

In essence, they give you more of a connection with your car and don't allow you to get distracted...and that is why I like them personally.

Erm, that's not the fault of an automatic, nor a credit to a manual.

Friend of mine had to stop driving manual transmissions due to arthritis.

It took me 3 months to get my manual after having order my car to spec. I couldn't believe I could not find a 4 door sedan outside of Subaru that had a manual in stock. Audi didn't have any, neither did Infiniti or BMW.

Wow. I was able to test drive a new BMW 328ix last month with manual. They're out there, but yeah kind of rare.

I must be in a tiny minority, as all of the cars I've ever owned (300ZX TT, 240SX and my Legacy GT.....actually still have all 3, worth more to me than what I could sell them for) are all manuals.

Same here. My wife's cars (Honda Civic, Toyota pickup, Mazda 3s, Subaru WRX on order) and mine (Mustang GT, Contour SVT, Mazdaspeed 6) have all been manuals.

here's a hidden bonus to owning a manual - fewer people can steal your car

Umm the auto G35 is just as fast as a manual. People always keep perpetuating the myth that manual is magically faster and gets better gas mileage. Well the opposite is true now-a-days. Autos are faster and get better gas mileage in many cars.

First 2 cars were manual, but I just bought a GTI with DSG. I can't stand pressing on the clutch 400 times when I'm stuck in traffic anymore.

I'll get another manual when I get a summer car, but for a daily car automatic is the way to go. I can't wait to be able to drink my coffee peacefully during morning drives...

Great, another inattentive commuter sitting in an appliance. I bet texting is easier too, without having to take your hands off the touchscreen now and again to shift.

http://www.studlife.com/news/2010/1...dents-occur-thursday-crime-alert-sent-friday/

After driving to her apartment and noticing suspicious subjects, the fiancee drove to the back of her apartment. After approaching her, the subjects insisted that she give them her keys and money. The victim handed over her possessions and they tried to steal her car. However, as they did not know how to drive a manual transmission, the suspects could not drive the vehicle. They therefore fled the scene on foot.

lulz, I love it.

Erm, that's not the fault of an automatic, nor a credit to a manual.

It is actually. Because when I have an automatic, I don't know where I am. Let's take a small second to think about this. Among making sure everything is on, I have to make sure I have a clean way to get out on an incline. So among shifting, me checking to make sure I'm in R, checking to make sure I'm clear, I must have somehow shifted past or mistaken the D for R by the quick glance.

With a manual, THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. I know EXACTLY where I am when I shift. I know where R has been in all my cars.

If a driver does not know how to drive stick shift, that driver does not really know how to properly operate a motor vehicle, IMO.

Even better... my Contour SVT had a lockout ring for reverse. If you didn't know about it, you were NOT getting the transmission into reverse. You had to pull a ring that was below the shift knob upwards with your fingers, while you shifted into reverse. Was pretty easy once you know about it. I was laughing once when I picked up my car from being serviced. A service guy fiddled with it for around five minutes trying to back it out of a spot, before finally giving up and asking me.

With a manual, THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. I know EXACTLY where I am when I shift. I know where R has been in all my cars.

It isn't always in the same place. Most cars have it in the bottom right, but some are elsewhere.

I play volleyball a lot and I see a lot of people spraining their ankles. That's my one worry, having my ankle sprained and not being able to drive the car. I don't have a back up plan in case that happens. I just have to hope its not my clutch ankle.
