I play volleyball a lot and I see a lot of people spraining their ankles. That's my one worry, having my ankle sprained and not being able to drive the car. I don't have a back up plan in case that happens. I just have to hope its not my clutch ankle.

In college I had a bad sprain once. I was still able to get around with my manual Mustang GT. I basically drove one-footed. In first gear I would let out the clutch really slow until I got going, and then I shifted without the clutch. No big deal.

I have one of each and they both have advantages and disadvantages. When I'm going to sit in traffic for 2 hours, I prefer the CTS. On nice days or when I'm driving to the closer office, I take the Vette.

It is actually. Because when I have an automatic, I don't know where I am. Let's take a small second to think about this. Among making sure everything is on, I have to make sure I have a clean way to get out on an incline. So among shifting, me checking to make sure I'm in R, checking to make sure I'm clear, I must have somehow shifted past or mistaken the D for R by the quick glance.

With a manual, THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. I know EXACTLY where I am when I shift. I know where R has been in all my cars.

No, it is not. You are the operator of the vehicle. It is an inanimate object. You are completely responsible for the movements of the vehicle.

So if an automatic starts mis-shifting/not-shifting, that is your fault as well? Get out of here, that is empty logic. The point being that I know where I am with a manual, don't with an automatic. Common sense.

how do you not know whether you are in R/N/D/etc.?

there's even a cute little display in the instrument cluster to tell you, just in case you forget

Great, another inattentive commuter sitting in an appliance. I bet texting is easier too, without having to take your hands off the touchscreen now and again to shift.

Intelligent people are able to drink coffee and not stare at the cup. I work on the road most of the time.

I don't text, and use a bluetooth headset. (it's law here...)

If the automatic transmission suffers a hardware failure and goes into incorrect gears, that is not your fault, but that is not the case of your story. You are responsible for being aware of where you placed the shifter. It clearly sets the shifter into each gear, and there is a display in the gauge cluster. Again, it is 100% your fault.

And you can clearly and VERY easily shift past or not far enough into the wrong gear. Once again, with a MT you know where you are. Not sure how you can't wrap your dense little brain around that simple fact.

Reverse in my car is left of first gear. You have to push down on the shifter to put it into reverse. I have put it in reverse instead of first before. It's not that hard to do. I would rather have my reverse next to my 6th gear like my G35 did. I never mistook forward for reverse in that car.

In all my 5-speeds it has been to the right and down. (Standard pattern I'm assuming).

I noticed I miswrote. I meant to say reverse is left of first gear not right, that would make it third gear

German cars tend to have the push down and to the left pattern (except for 190e 16v that has it where 1st usually is), asian cars that i've had had the R on far right.

We've come to a point where the 6 spd manual has become obsolete because of technology. 6spd and 7spd auto's are as fast or .1 tick slower then there manual counterparts so really whats the point of doing all the work anymore?

Because I love the connection I feel with the car when I'm gripping my knob and slotting it through the gates. Quickly shoving it in and feeling the smoothness of the . . . uh um . . .

I had some bad ankle injuries through out the years and was always able to manage. Maybe not the smoothest...heavy traffic sucked...but I'd happily do it again to keep my manual.

I wonder how we compare against other countries (particularly in Europe and Asia).

Europe is pretty much the opposite, good luck trying to rent an auto in a car rental in Europe.

I don't really feel superior to anyone who drives an automatic.

I just enjoy driving a manual, and even in traffic where it can be a PITA, I just feel fulfilled getting the car moving the way I want it to. I am just so mad that I waited so long to learn to drive one.

I was searching for a 2002-ish Subaru Outback Sedan with the H6 and manual, I'm pretty sure no one bought them. The sedan was not very popular in the first place, and when combined with the manual :\
