So as mainly a gamer who plays, BF, Dayz, Arma 3, Total War, and other games like those, is there any benefit for 6 or 8 cores yet?

I have a 4770k at 4.3ghz and 8GB ram with a 980Ti at 1290mhz clock.

More cores isnt really the main benefit as much as cache for the E series in terms of gaming.

But wait and see tomorrow. Then decide what you want.

You're asking this the day before skylake is released?

We know skylake is going to be about 10-15% faster clock for clock. like clockwork intel!

Im wondering if the 2 physical cores of the X99 is better for games now at 144hz 1440p

Existing games are limited to a great extent by the way DirectX 11 works and how many games are coded. Regardless of how many cores you have, a great deal of processing is still done on a single core. In many cases it is mostly secondary tasks that are run on the additional cores. You are still limited far more by single core performance than you are by number of cores in just about any game. We only recently got to the point where there was a difference between dual core and quad core in some games. In other games, there still isn't a difference.

DirectX 12 is supposed to help with this, but keep in mind that will only apply to games that actually use DirectX 12. Existing DirectX 11 games will still still use DirectX 11 unless they are specifically updated to use DirectX 12.

This conclusion will likely be examined specifically by competent reviewers tomorrow in Skylake reviews. Lots of people are wondering this same thing

Like it always has been, it's going to be game specific. My theory though is I'm not going to be hurt as much by the slight IPC disadvantage in games that can't take advantage of the extra cores as I would be on a mainstream platform in the games that can take advantage of them.

I'm in the same boat. Been planning a 5820k build for awhile but I held off to see what happens with Skylake.

Anxiously awaiting some detailed benches/comparisons.

P.S. 100th post!!!

lol 100 posts in 8 years of being here. Quality, not quantity

4790K + new mobo (replaces your faulty parts), plus you keep your RAM which you can't (easily) do with 6-core or Skylake.

5820K or 4790K. Skylake is a disappointment. We've hit the point, where with overclocking consistently getting worse on every new chip generation, that we've reached a state where the last generation is faster with both overclocked.

Considering my 3570k OC'd still keeps up with Anand's Skylake samples...

I will pass on this new generation, again.

FWIW, after jumping from a 2700k to 4790k, for mostly the lulz, I am actually not hating the FIVR on the 4790k (OC to 4.5 - 4.6).

With a Nepton 140XL keeping it hella cool, it is quite an amazing chip.

I would recommend going 4790k and bumping your RAM to 16 GB and maybe a newer n bigger SSD (for game storage) that uses smaller process flash.

id say RMA the faulty board. If your board is faulty that might be why your CPU is not overclocking well

Really for enthusiasts, professionals and gamers a 6-core Haswell is the better choice in 2015.
Q1 2016, 14nm Broadwell-E will be the final blow for the socket 1151.
