I ended up taking advantage of this deal after having Time Warner. $15/month at a lower speed was worthwhile to me versus $50/month. Went from 7Mbps to 3Mbps as that was the fastest offered in the area. Service wise I have had no issues from either Time Warner or AT&T, its really the customer service and tech support that is horrible for both.

For those wondering about the modem offered by AT&T, it is an additional cost above the monthly cost. Its something like $75, I instead bought a Trendnet from Amazon for about $40 which has worked fine.

Of note, customer service cannot help in any form if you buy your own modem. They stuck on that issue when I called and proceeded to transfer me around. I eventually found the url of the setup page for AT&T which was the reason I had called.

All and all a worthwhile deal even if it included some aggravation.

Time Warner is offering 10/1 Internet for $29.99/mth for 12 months in SoCal, although I'd probably still take AT&T's 6/768k for $19.95.

Do you mind linking that setup page?

Most of homes cant even have speed they advertise b/c the phone lines are so old and dirty. Best speed I got was 500kbs when I had at&t so I dump it.

I think your experience is a rare one. The limit of speed is shown by what packages are available for your location. At my old house, 1.5 Mbps was the fastest available, and I consistently got 1.25 Mbps. At my new house, 3.0 Mbps is the fatest available, and I consistently get 2.55 Mbps.

I really wish the 6.0 Mbps connection were available at my house, but it's not. Still, I should call to see if I can get my 3.0 Mbps price dropped from $37.01 per month to $14.95 per month.

Do you have to use their AT&T modem and gateway? Or can you buy the modem and just use you home router/switch like through cable?

The second one. You can also get modems off of ebay for less than $30.

I believe this was the setup page. In my case I had to enter the dsl account number they gave me since I had no phone number registered with them.

https://attreg.att.net/

If anyone has further interest in not buying their modem, I bought a Trendnet TDM-C400 from amazon ( currently ~$37 with free shipping ). One of the comments there posted to put it in bridging mode for AT&T, which was the following settings changed under the quick configuration heading.

Encapsulation: 1483 Bridged IP LLC
Bridge: Enabled
IGMP: Enabled
Use DHCP: Disabled
Default Route: Disabled

Then just create a connection (on a windows based box) and enter the user name and password from the AT&T registration site.

Hope this helps.

this is great! anyone call up TW? Did they even bother to try giving a better rate? 20 bucks a month is awesome! I'm gonna switch even tho I'm happy with TW the service is good on my end it's just the 50 dollars a month sucks.

I've read stories like these...

Actiontec GT701D Ethernet DSL Modem with Routing Capabilities (Electronics) Bought it two weeks ago. It took me doing some tinkering just to get it working with ATT. Finally got it working. Came home from vacation and it would not connect. Called ATT since the DSL light was flashing (Actiontek tech support number stated if the light was flashing, it was a server issue and not the modem). ATT checked everything they could, however, they could not give me exact help on this modem without paying extra for it.

Called Actiontek. Their agent said it was definitely a service issue and not the modem. After getting sick and tired of wading through automated help lines just to get to a live person, then have them blame each other, then asking me to pay to get more detailed help (ATT), I decided to experiment and go buy a Motorola modem specifically made for ATT DSL. Worked perfectly, the software setup program was simple and explained everything step-by-step.

Once again, I have proven the point I try to live by, you get what you pay for. Do NOT get this modem without expecting some issues.

Doesn't matter what modem you buy, if it's not ATT's Modem they will not even try to help you unless you pay more for their support. So something you should consider if your service goes out. If you buy a different modem other then ATT's, about the only thing they will tell you is if the service is out in your area.

Then you are stuck wondering if it's the modem, configuration of modem (lost settings or configured wrong), your computer (proxy), Computer hardware (port died), Router, Or worst yet, some sort of connection from you jack back the pole.

So, there are a few things that could go wrong then again you could just pay your 40 bucks and not have anything go wrong for the next 5 years! Roll the dice. But, I hear tech support for ATT is bad while I've had TW come out and replace the line to my modem twice. The other time was because I wanted to move my cable modem down stairs.

How in the world would you get "DSL without a phone line", when "DSL" = "Digital Subscriber Line"?
Are they playing fast and loose with terminology or is it simply fraud?

They even have a fancy schmancy name for it: naked dsl.

I've been on this for a little over two years now between my previous apartment and current home. Aside from the existing deal I've been at $24.95 for 6/768. Highest I've actually hit was 5/620; but for no contract on a month to month term I can't complain. Might try to push for the deal though

I'd avoid their 2Wire routers/modems they sell. I went through about 4 of them being defective over time and eventually went and got my own. 2Wire's gateway software is easy to use, but their hardware seems to burn out / take a crap way too often.

Connectivity aside from the routers has been very solid.

I work for Qwest and we call it Stand Alone DSL when no POTS(Plain Old Telephone Service) is attached. You can always expect to lose about 15% of bandwidth to modem to office communication. POTS or voice uses 300 to 3300 Hz and most DSL uses 3500+, hence the need for filters to remove the higher freq. noise. as well as the reason why music always sounds so tinny over a phone line which was designed around voice freqs. Any modem with upgraded firmware that is on the approved vendor list will work but you may have to call the support center to reset the password as each modem is pass protected to that line/switch. I go out and install 40/20 all day long but come home to my very slow 1.5 every night.By next year the fiber up grade will get to my area and I'll finally move into the fast lane. PS. a new modem technology will soon be available that should easily double the range of the wire and approach 100.

Around here ATT's techs call it Dry Loop DSL. I have it, 3Mb is the limit where I live. I tried to get around buying their modem, used a Zoom and a DLink with unreliable results, a used Motorola that never connected, a used 2-Wire that worked for about a week then died, and now a used Netopia that works beautifully.

Bottom line, for whatever reason, only the "ATT specified" modems seem to work here. Weird.

Hey, where did you hear about the 10/1 in SoCal? They're about to bump me off my last promo deal; is that only for new customers?

Wow, just for fun I thought I'd play along & check out the options & they don't offer the 6MB option in my area here in San Jose. If they don't offer that here, where the hell do they offer it? Hate to say it, but I'll stick with Comcast for now.
