Finally they can tell comcast to shutup with there dumb commercial about how fast they are compared to 786K DSL which doesn't exist anymore.

Sadly the 6 megabit is a sync speed so you will only get 5.2 megabit download speed but comcast isn't really producing 8 megabits downloads either since they oversell their network.

Phone Line + DSL = less then $50 {SBC/AT&T will be forced to launch Naked DSL: Standalone DSL }

Most SBC/AT&T areas have RT's that are pretty close to people's homes so the 6500 feet distance limit is not that bad.

Why does this (Comcast commercials) bother you? Are you a DSL fanboy? To be honest with you I am a Comcast 6M customer that currently gets 9.6M down for $34.95/mo. Yeah, comcast sucks when they emphasize the positive ingnore the negative. SBC also requires you to have a phone line with them. Don't forget about the slower speeds as you move away from the central office. Yes, your cable may be slower as more people are on the node, but let's not go overboard about how great DSL is. I was happy to fire SBC as my overpriced phone provider and don't plan on going back any time soon.

I agree with bigboxes. I had problem with noise on SBC lines and they never resolved it even after 5 visits. I sticking with cable, easier set-up.

That's nice and all, but we only have Verizon DSL here.. which depending on where you live IS only 768K (max of 3MB if you are really, *really* close, norm is 1.5MB)

Comcast is 6-8 meg... this is a nice step forward though.. hopefully others will follow.

Holding out for FIOS... Since I live in N. Texas, I'm hoping it won't be long. Though dumping my cable company has appealed to me on several occasions.

WRONG. I have comcast gold plan (8mbit/1mbit). I ALWAYS get between 7.9 and 8.5 megabits down and 0.95 - 1.0 megabits up with them, these are actual download speeds. Sometimes I need multiple connections to saturate my full bandwidth (i.e. the other end is the bottleneck). I have never seen these speeds dwindle, and have been on the high-speed plan since they began offering it (1 year +). NOTE that it is very dependent on having a new modem. My speeds were ~4 mbit/0.6mbit on an old RCA DCT215, upgraded the modem to a Motorola SB5120, and BAM! 8mbit/1mbit every time.

This 'overselling the network' crap from DSL fanbois is getting old..

Other than that, nice price...

No, it's not that, it's their commercial's information that's bothersome. My local cable company is doing the same thing. They'll use DSL and dialup together like they're a similar product, they'll say things like "While you're waiting and waiting for your DSL download to complete, you can already have it with cable", and they make it sound like you need a CS degree to plug a filter into a phone jack.

Deceptive smearing at it's finest.

I can agree with that. I hate their commercials that are deceptive. The same goes for cable television/satellite television. Misinformation. There are pros and cons to everything.

I've also got a big gripe with my Comcast internet. They took FIVE WEEKS to fix my line issue (was a card at the node) when I recently moved. But I have been very happy with the service otherwise (six years). I like reliability and cost/performance. I too got an upgraded modem (Motorola Surfboard 5120) and my DL speeds were consistantly 9.6M. I was flabergasted to say the least.

Time warner?

Pshhhh, how about Insightbb? Or even Alltel...

Because I cannot run my Exchange server off of Insight's network, I had to get DSL through Alltel. Although I am paying for the 3.0\384K network, I know I only get around 2.0mbps download, but I do get the full 384K (WHOOOP - D- DOO!!!), so I had to keep my Inisght (4.0 megs down and 384 up).

so, from your sole personal experience, everyone else is wrong...including the person who posted above you saying that he's on the 6mb plan but only gets 1.1mb/s down? here i'll quote him for you:

fanboi BS. i personally think that stupid...whatever works fastest/cheapest is teh best...whatever the service.

Thats a nice price. But I dont even have my landline hooked up yet and that would cost me money.

Right now the only thing I have available is MediaCom. I'm paying 55 a month for 3Mbit. And they only way I can utilize all of that is if I run Download Accelerator.

I'll reiterate this point again and again and again until people get it: being further away from the Central Office doesn't necessarily mean your speed goes down. Back in the old old OLD days of DSL that was true, but now most telcoms that offer DSL service deploy Remote Terminals capable of being DSL endpoints at various locations throughout their coverage area. These are almost always linked up to the CO via fiberoptic (and a lot of it) so the speed you get at X feet from an RTS will almost always be the same as the speed you get X feet from the CO. (give or take a millisecond of latency)

Besides, AT&T will only give you 6M DSL if you are within a certain number of feet of the CO or an RTS, (6,000-something according to the article) unless you get an override from the engineering department. (They have to come out and run some tests to verify that you're capable of getting the speed) 90% of the time if they let you sign up for 6M down (that's maximum 6M down, by the way) you'll get something in the 4.5~6M down range.

For those of you worried about the cost of the phone line, look into Federal Universal Phone Line service (cheap pricing if you make under 12k a year, e.g. college students) or a metered line. (Usually $5/mo + taxes, then a ~$0.20/min charge per call, which can easily be avoided by never plugging in a phone)
