6 months after Win10 upgrade and I still cannot access card readers

I'm really wondering if I should start all over again with Win7. Six months ago I upgraded to Win10. Since then I have never been able to access my internal card reader. My system also would not recognize a USB attached external card reader. Sometimes if I ran the hardware trouble shooter the external card reader would come up but the fix was only good for that session; when I restarted I was back to square one.

I have also had trouble with my external hard drives being recognized, having to manually assign drive letters to them almost every time. And then there's the Canon printer software that won't install at all and Canon has o solution.

My ASUS P6X58D-E mobo doesn't have Win10 drivers, but most of the drivers for USB would be MS, not hardware specific, and my card readers don't have any Win10 drivers at all, only 7 or 8.

I now regret installing Win10. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would sure appreciate it.

Would disabling automatic driver updates in Windows cause the issue you're having? I think I had a problem installing an xbox one controller in Windows 8.1 and it may have been caused by me disabling the auto driver updates/installation.

Thanks, Elixer and balloonshark, my confusion, unlike the person on the MS link was that I had used the Win10 compatibility tool and it said I was compatible. I'll have to check to see if automatic driver updates is active. sure is a PITA.

Latest mobo BIOS? Which USB ports are you using, the Intel or the NEC/Renesas chip (for USB 3.0)? Might want to read these threads for info on updating firmware of the NEC chip:

If not using the NEC (USB 3.0) ports, then it could just be a config issue that wasn't handled properly during upgrade or lacking a vendor-specific driver for the USB card reader. I could check it via TeamViewer if you want just PM me.

If memory serves those NEC controllers have UASP issues on 8.1 and 10. I had issues getting a Server 2012 R2 box to reliably work with an external USB drive and that ended up being the issue.

NEC chip only provides 2 ports on this board so not losing much to disable altogether and just buy a USB 3.1 add-in board. But he did mention problems using an "internal" card reader, as well, which typically plug to the mobo header supplied by the Intel ICH10 USB controller.
