Okay,
I was tempted to just buy 4 of these since that's the max the rebate allows. (got in on last deal)

Ah well...bought one more! that makes my total 2!

What am I gonna do with 2 of these bad boys? haha. I bought the original one for a shoutcast server that I can tune into around the house.

I guess this system will be for...right...yeah...I'm sure something will come up (besides rc5)

shoutcast serving doesn't max out a 2.4GHz p4, does it? you can probably do anything else you'd want to do on the same system. i had a dual celeron 366 system until a couple weeks ago, it was my file server (windows sharing for my roommates, nfs for me), dns cache, mail server, development environment, and kitchen sink!

then again, i'm here because i'm being a frickin vulture, waiting for the next big dell laptop deal to come around... i missed the november one, and i was kicking myself. let's hope the 8500 drives down the prices on the 8100s...

on topic: hot deal, i'd get on it if i weren't already in debt

Im stupid!

I ordered another without receiving the two on order. I just got emails from Dell telling me that the two on order will take another week.

SHould handle Photoshop very well if you add memory (make sure it's ECC or it won't work)... as for the video... technically a 8 Meg Rage Pro LT should be fast enough for Photoshop. You won't be doing any gaming on it though.

I'm trying really hard not to listen to you guys and not to buy this server, the mind is weak when it comes to good deals like this.

Well I hopped on the SC600 bandwagon.

Ordered last night and got two emails but when I get onine to check order status I see nothing.

???? How long does it take for the orderstatus to show up online?

This will be my central file server. got too many computers and stuff all over the place so it will be nice to centralize.

Little bit woried about the wimpy 250W PSU. Don't think I will be loading this up with 15KRPM scsi drives....

Don't know what OS I will use either Linux or Freebsd, whichever has the best support for the serverworks chipset.

The 2.4Ghz P4 may be over kill for a file server. If I was sticking at 100-BASE-T I know it would be overkill, but at Gig? Not too familiar with that.

Thinking of buying a 1.7Ghz Celeron at neweg for $54 and using the 2.4Ghz in a gaming rig I might build. Any reason that would not work?

It's a good thing I still have a Voodoo 5500 PCI sitting here

Good enough for the games I like...

This is very tempting. My daughters computer has gone out at college. It is tempting to get this and let her have my Abit KG7 w/ AMD XP1600. Is there any reason that a server can't be used as a desktop system?

Edit: After reading thru the thread some more, I see why it would not be too great as a desktop; No AGP slot!

My 600SC just came in yesterday, and I am playing with it now. These PCI slots have an extra key in them, no PCI sound card in my spare parts box will fit. This includes Sound Blaster PCI128 and Live.

I found one PCI video card with the extra key, a Voodoo 3 PCI. Unfortunately, plugging in the Voodoo card does NOT disable the onboard video. And there appears to be no option in the CMOS setup to disable the onboard video.

Unless someone out there knows something else, it appears (at least on preliminary investigation) that you will HAVE to use the onbaord video, and you CANNOT have sound.

Bummer.

Hmm, not good on that video issue, does anyone else have any ideas on how to disable the onboard video? Does your OS at least see the Voodoo3?

Also htne, I remember a while back there were some USB audio things floating around. Maybe you can check that to provide audio support.

link to dell support forum

At the above link, there is a conversation about this exact problem with the PowerEdge 600SC server. Someone replied that the Soundblaster Audigy sound card is keyed correctly to fit into the PCI slots on the SC600 motherboard. The only problem with that answer is the cost -- if I remember correctly, an Audigy will set you back a minimum of $50 or $60.

In the same thread (see link above), others were asking about video card compatibility. No one answered, and this thread is from back in December, 2002. Not looking good so far.

ON EDIT:
link to another post at dell support forums
This post says that the ATI Radeon 7000 PCI will work in the SC600.

2ND EDIT:
I found a TNT2 M64 PCI video card. Plugged into PCI slot 1 or 2, it prevents power up. The fans jerk, then stop. With The Voodoo 3 PCI card, the system booted OK (on the built in video), but Windows 2000 did not see the 2nd video card.

According to that review over at 2cpu, the 600SC has 4 64-bit slots and 1 32-bit slot. Any sound/video card should work in the 32-bit slot. Any "universal" 32-bit card (with the key cut) will fit in the 64-bit slots, but using a 32-bit card there will slow down the entire PCI bus (including the onboard IDE, etc. most likely). Getting a video card to actually work in any of the slots is a totally different story...

If I hadn't just built my dually (on a Tyan Serverworks MB, btw... the Serverworks chipset rocks), I would definitely get in on this. Heck, I might anyways.

Not true. The one and only 32 bit PCI slot has the extra key. I have examined around 30 PCI cards this evening (video cards, sound cards, SCSI cards, etc, etc), and only 3 of these cards will physically fit into the one 32 bit PCI slot. All 3 of the cards which will physically fit are video cards, and none of them works.

Newegg has the ATI Radeon 7000 PCI card for $44 with free shipping, I just ordered one. Still not sure what I am going to do about sound, I really hate to spend the money on an Audigy.

As to swapping the motherboard, that might work. It looks like a standard ATX form factor. Or I could just sell this sucker (as if everybody and their uncle hadn't already bought one).

bit:

Thank you for posting. I just ordered two systems. One for my upcoming Linux system. One for my future mother-in-law.

Also if you want to save more, don't forget to use your ebates.com 2% rebate, upromise 2% rebate and Chase Shell mastercard 1% rebate. That's all I can think of. Good luck.

Hope somebody can find the solution to the sound card; otherwise MIL will kill me to order a PC without sound.
