Well, I chose not to order last night and now it is only $80 off instantly and I won't be ordering. Thank you Dell for saving me some money.

If you subsribed to Dell SB, you should receive an email with a 10% coupon (not stackable with the 5% though)

If you look at my earlier post (about 6 posts up from this one) you will see that I already have the 10% off, but the additional 5% does not equal the $30 that is no longer being taken off (unless I were to choose a $600+ server).

I never get these emails with discount coupons. What is the "DELL SB" mentioned that makes this happen?

Thx

How long is Dell taking to confirm orders? I did receive the e-mail immediately acknowledging the order, but have yet to receive the confirming order with order number, expected shipping date, etc.

How loud are these things? I'm thinking about ordering, but I don't want a noisey box... can the noise be fixed with quieter fans?

I ordered on the 8th and the Confirmation came shortly after. I don't believe the unit has gone into production yet.

On my other 600SC I ordered (when this deal first surfaced weeks ago) it came today!!! Can't wait to break into this thing. I've post my findings a little later.

Alrighty!

Here it is. Pictures added too!

The system itself is anything you'd expect...good design, nice removable bays...all well done. The mouse is crappy, the keyboard decent (I use optical mouse anyway).

I wanted to plug in a TV Tuner, but my ati tuner doesn't have the "key" ... the FastTrak TX2k I have does have said "key"

Pictures...
PCI card with "key" versus one without
PCI card slot key tab

A hidden cost in this system is the price of memory. Also, if you plan on using the system for anything (like a gaming box for a buddy when he comes over)...you'll have to do some work to get it where you want it. I know someone mentioned the radeon7k having the proper pci format to fit...I will have to check my Voodoo5 PCI.

Thanks for the info! and nice pics on the "key" .... I expected the mouse to suck but Im sure most people will use optical now. Good to hear it is a solid box....

Thanks!

yeah...Dell cases are always well built. This one is fantastic. It's a little noisy...although for having 4 fans it's very good.

Items of interest...
-The lock on the back has this like slide piece...when you look on the back you'll see what I mean. (I tore the door off in my hurry to smell the new PCB....mmmm )
-Also, the front cover pops off UB3R easy (for cleaning) thanks to a little purple plastic lever. (this is cool)
-And, everything is thumbscrew based...very trick.

Boot time is incredible SLOW. I dabbled in the Bios a little but will have to check it more.

To Do:
-Test out cutting a "key" into my sound card (looks like it's possible....anything wrong with doing this?
-Fix Boot time (HD seek is slow)
-Ram is horribly expensive...
-This has a Gigibit NIC, right? ... I might look into a little setup for my main system to this...

Best Case: You destroy a sound card.
Worst Case: You destroy a sound card, and your motherboard.

You know, the notch is not there for a reason. The card is designed to run on 5V and the motherboard is designed to run on 3.3V. Can we see a problem here?

Serverworks IDE controllers were always known as crappy. I got all 4 of my systems as SCSI for a reason.

You pay for reliability

I hope you got a Gigabit switch off another hot deal

Tweakmeister, did you try out that Voodoo 5500. I have one of those cards here and I'd like to know.

And there's no reason he can't just create a LAN with a crossover cable, that would be nice with the gigabit nics.

Due to the technical difficulty, I decide to sell my 600SC server.

I am going to take out Intel CPU and its mother board. Swap with my old AMD Athlon 1700XP, its motherboard and the memories. Sell as Dell 600SC with AMD CPU and board. Buy myself a new board and get on with it.

I think this is the best solution to this issue. O'course I no longer need this board and its memory. Sell them on eBay and use the money for the new board and new memories.

Crossover as already stated to $40 gig card

Or just get a 4 port 1000TX switch. They are under $100 list, what's the requierment for a "hot deal"?

I'm putting together a gig-rig (should I trademark that?) and just asking questions often unearths a massive groundswell of anti-GIG sentiment

well not really bit, but it is there.

"only" twice as fast. You don't need it. Like you need 600FPS and a $400 graphics card.

AND ANOTHER THING: What is it with the total lack of reviews of gig hardware. The only ones I have found have been REALLY lame. There must be 5 different gig cards under $50 and three switches under $200 but try to figure out which is best.......

WAHOOO: Today dell came out with laptops with 1000TX.

I love it when a plan comes together!

Your idea to swap out parts is going to cost you cash - Once you do that it's just a generic box with no vendor support. Sell the Dell complete with all of it's parts, still under a one year waranty and it's going to be worth a lot more.

Mmm.. never thought about warranty issue. Maybe you are right, warranty do increase value. Thank you for the head up.
