Anyone else get a phone call from Dell asking whether the computer will be used for personal use or resold? I said personal, but I hope by doing so it doesnt negate any possible warranty transfers if I decided to sell it later on. hmmm

I think this is the best solution to this issue. O'course I no longer need this board and its memory. Sell them on eBay and use the money for the new board and new memories.

So you are going to sell it to some poor schmuch who thinks he's buying a full fledged dell computer? At least tell them they don't get a warranty and that the board and chip aren't original...

O'course not. I am not that bad. It would be funny then they boot up the PC and show AMD Athlon XP when box shows "Intel Inside".

You could just return it to to Dell too....

BTW, regarding the Voodoo 5500, does anyone have confirmation the PCI version works in this setup.
Thanks.

Astro -
Give me till the weekend to try the Voodoo5 PCI. The form factor on the card is correct...I know that much.

My FastTrak 2k is flipping on me. Although the Dell seems to recognize it well (even in the bios).

If there's one HUGE GRIPE I have....it's the little tin EMI strip on the bottom of the case along the door edge. I've already bent two of the little tabs there. What a poor design hah.

Phew, Astro....burning the midnight oil on that one?

While the thread is still relatively populated....can we get a small list going of places to get Gigabit hardware? Pricewatch has some D-Link cards for cheap it looks like...but where are these miracle 4-port switches for under $100?

Here's one..

Hawkings Technology has a 4 port gig switch for like 95$ and an 8 port for around $185. H-GS4T & H-GS8T - Giga Switches under $100

LL - thanks for the info

I guess the Hawking stuff is decent?

Voodoo5 PCI DOES WORK. I put it in the 32-bit slot and the system immediately booted using it as the primary automatically.

You may want to read this Dell Power Supply Adapter before you attempt this... You will fry your motherboard without it.

I feel sorry for someone who buys the Dell motherboard and tries to plug-in a standard ATX power supply

Well, it says at the bottom of the page some models do not need the adapter or are not compatible with it. Do we know for sure if we need it?

Doesn't list the 600SC server as one that does not need the adapter, only the Dimension 4300, 4400, 8100 & 8200. You can try but...

Here's another article which has the pin-outs Dell proprietary (non-standard) ATX design

Yeah the Hawkings stuff is decent. I know there is one other Giga Switch out there in the $125 range for a 4 port, but I can't remember off the top of my head. Never heard an problems with Hawking though?

Review on their Wireless 3 port Print Server

Review on their 10/100 broadband dsl/cable soho router

Review on dual WAN Firewalol router w/ 4 port switch

Overall the reviews seem decent on what i found. Nothing real negative. Maybe someone has some input?

What's the latest order someone made that has shipped?

Mine is March 9, and is waiting to enter production (shipping is slated for March 27)

Starting to sound like they mean it - all other times, my units from dell shipped in 2-3 days after ordering.

I've got two orders pending -- one for 3/28 and one for 3/31. I'm probably going to cancel both if they don't get moved up by middle of next week.

I have a very long story, but to make it short... Dell lied and told me my Credit Card was declined after my machine sat in production for 2 weeks. I ordered it on Feb 28th and It was to ship on March 13th (Thursday). Well I started calling earlier in the week cause It never went into production. I was told serveral times that It was because they were out of some "Processor" part and It would be built ASAP when they got the parts.

Well I called back Thursday morning and the guy told me the same thing, except this time he said he was going to find out my new ship date and call me back. Well he never did and so i called back at lunch time (about 4 hours later). This time the guy on the other side of the phone says "Oh your CC was declined and your order never went into production". He then proceeded to CANCEL my order, saying he could only rerun my CC with a whole new order. I was pissed and told him I was calling AMEX and I would call him right back.

I called Amex and they said they didn't know what the problem was, and that it shouldn't have been declined (I have an Amex Platinum, it has no limit, so as long as i'm not late on bills, i can purchase anything on it). Well He said he would call Dell and find out what the problem was and replace my order. So he 3 way the call to Dell and the guy said the same thing, that Amex declined my card and that It was Never in production. I told him that was BS that My order sat in the que for TWO weeks "in production" but never moved. He said it wasn't "possible" that if i was declined, that the order cannot enter production. He said he would go review my account and get back to me.

While on Hold the Amex guy said "hey wait, on Feb 28th we approved an order for Dell for $XXX.XX" I was like "YEAH NO KIDDING!!! Dell is trying to pull something". Well the Dell guy comes back on and sais "hey you were right, there was some sort of "gitch" with your order and it "was declined" but went into production. The amex guy told him it was BS that he showed an approval and hold of funds for Dell on Feb 28th. The guy said there was nothing he could do about it but restart my order.

Well I said ok, go rerun my order, and AMEX is ON THE PHONE so you can get immediate approval and Amex was recording the whole conversation He said ok, ran the card, approved. The i said, well now that you've changed my order date, I want to know how to get my $100 MIR. He was like "there is no way you can get the MIR, cause It's not Dells fault that Amex declined your card" ARGH, total morons at Dell. Me and the Amex guy explained to him that I was told on Feb28th that It was approved and It went into production. HE had NO RIGHT to cancel my order and just not rerun my card. He basically said too bad. I told him to go get a manager.

After about 4-5 minutes of waiting (the whole time me and the Amex guy were talking about computers, great guys at Amex) and the Dell guy came back on the phone. He said "I spoke with my manager and there is no way you can still get the $100 MIR" I was like WTF YOU JERKS!!! He then went on and said that he would note on my invoice that I was ineligible for the $100 MIR, but that for the trouble he would take $100 off the original price and that would make us even. Actually in the Long run of things It made my computer $12 cheaper for Tax reasons since I live in TN!! I then said "well my computer was supposed to ship today, but because of your fault now I have to wait till April 1st??" I told him to expedite my order and get it to me Quickly. He said he really couldn't do much about it but that he would give me Free Overnight shipping...

In otherwords, I really believe that Dell was trying to cancel my order because I'm paying $440.xx for a 2.4GHZ w/ a 36GB SCSI U320 HD w/ a Free 73GB SCSI U320 HD. I think they oversold what they have and they are out of parts and having to get them back in. They lost big money on this deal, but I'm GOING TO GET THIS COMPUTER. They wont stop me

hey likelinus - it's a pain isn't it?

I find that I have to babysit more orders than I care to admit. It seems to have become true in many instances that what you order and what you get or get charged are two different things.

the way of the world i guess, but it's not fun.

VERY frustrating. I realize I'm basically getting stuff WAY cheap and I can live with it. But It's definately not fun like you said.

linuxthinker - I know a good number of people did that without realizing the 73GB could be ordered with the first one.

I just firmly believe that they were thinking they could make me reorder the computer and pay $100 more dollars. I could be wrong and It could be just a glitch, but who knows. I feel otherwise

and no..i'm not into conspiracy theories

Dell can be a pain in the ass sometimes.

However, my recent experience with them wasn't so bad. My order for the Dell 1600SC was cancelled due to the $500 daily limit on my debit card. I called them back up and informed them of the daily limit so they can bill me appropriately. Since they had to cancel the old order and enter a new one (new order date too), they knocked $100 off to compensate for the $100 rebate. Few days later, I found that my order was on hold due to the daily spending limit. I had been on a spending spree lately so Dell was in line to charge my card.

I called Dell once again and gave em my AMEX card. They had to re-enter the order and this time, for some unknown reason, knocked off another $60 on my order.

So for $540 SHIPPED, I got a P4 2.0 Xeon with (2) 73GB U320 SCSI drives

I bought one too .. lots of problems with the order process. First I ordered and forgot to include the "included" std keyboard/mouse, so I called, and, of course they had to cancel that one. Then I had problems placing the replacement order, and ended up placing two orders since the first time through, I got an error on the final order submission screen. Finally, I seem to have it straightened out, and the order is showing as in the first stage of "in production" with a 3/31 ship date. Do you think maybe they got more orders for this than they expected?

If anybody has installed RH 8.0 on the 600SC and there's anything odd about the installation that I might need to know, please post. (Do I need any special drivers for their 3rd IDE channel for the optical devices?)

Thanks,
David
