My ship date is March 28th.....more than enough time to give Dell some reason to Cancel my order or do something lame. I just hope they follow through this time and don't be morons. They redid my order on March 13th.

Dcon - welcome to AT forums

LL - You might be suprised...my first one came early. My next one is coming 26th. I'm hoping it comes early

GOOD NEWS!!!!

The latest Rev P4...SL6RZ is what my first 600SC came with. These are overclocking (obviously in another system) to 3.0ghz+ air cooled very easily.
Even if you don't overclock....you're getting a good chip with these boxes.

Thanks for the good news!

Actually I've NEVER had a problem with Dell before. I've ordered a few systems and various parts with no problems. Hopefully things will go smooth now that they fixed their "gitch" with my order

Yeah in the end Dell seems to come through

My box is happily set up now...Win2k Pro on a 15gb boot drive with a Fasttrak and dual 80gb drives (raid-1). Very fast! I'm just going to use stock video and no sound for the time being...

Gigabit ethernet is still on my mind but it's probably a little ways down the road. I might try to find a local dotbomb with some cheap hardware.

The main thing this baby needs is ram. Pricewatch is showing 512mb for about ~$72+ out the door. 256mb is about ~$42 so it's obviously a better deal to go with 512mb.

Got mine today (well really about 5 days ago but it sat in my apartment office.. different story)

I put a SB Live in the 32 bit pci slot and a linksys wireless pci adapter in one of the 64 bit slots (yes both are 3.3v). Went to install the drivers for the NIC and it blue screened on me. I should be able to use a 32 bit card in a 64 bit slot right?

Going to try to d/l the latest drivers and reinstall the card...

Ok so now I am pissed...

I can not get this Linksys WMP54G wireless PCI card to work in this thing. I tried reinstalling Windows 2000 putting on SP3 and then installing the drivers for the card again. Windows recognizes it as an unknown NIC card and as soon as I install the drivers it blue screens and says hardware malfunction contact your hardware vendor for support - the system has halted. Then when I try to reboot it blue screens when booting saying unable to load driver blah blah blah...

The card works fine. I took it out of the dell and put it in this machine with no problems (this is XP though and the Dell is 2000). So I called Linksys they said basically it was not their problem that the card is conflicting with the system, so then I called Dell and she basically told me that it is not their problem that it is a driver issue. She also said they can not do any software support on a Server running 2000 professional - lol

Any suggestions? I am going to load XP and see if it works on there.

Dell isn't software support. They are hardware support for the hardware they provide. NOT for hardware you are trying to install on your own.

This is one reason why they have onsite engineer to enginner tech support for people who dont know anything about servers. You're kind of SOL with any software or parts you are trying to add. Not really Dells fault and you can't blame them. Sort of like a Car dealer won't work on a car's engine if you've added aftermarket parts like a Supercharger. It voids the warranty so to speak.

Does anyone know if you slow down all the 64BIT slots if you put an 32bit card in one of the slots?

Also does this server require REGISTERED ram only? There are both Registered and Unbuffered (unregistered) ECC ram. Can it accept either?

Dell doesn't use proprietary PS anymore... as least not in the Dimension 4100, 4300, 4400, 4500, 8200, Optiplex 160, 240, I've replaced them in. They were all standard ATX PS.

Don't blame me if you don't get a standard supply though, always check the pins to see if they match up.

I see that you guys are having problems with installing widows XP pro.
I installed it 2 days ago on the scsi system and has NO problems what so ever. I did not even have to install the scsi drivers.
All I did was put the xp cd in and it was just a simple installation.
Only problem that I had was with the Nic that was fixed by installing the Intel drivers.

XP installed fine. It is just a matter of getting the Linksys wireless PCI card to work without the system crashing for me.

What's the best price for memory for these PowerEdge 600SCs?

I find $56.99 for 256mb, $142.99 for 512mb - at crucial. Better prices anywhere?

CPU - it is a 2.4 providing you chose that model.

RAM PRICES - www.pricewatch.com for ram

LINKSYS CARD - try *disabling* the onboard NIC. Also, try putting the Linksys in the 32-bit slot. You should be able to get something to work. Also check your network properties in Win2k.

I picked up some Registered ECC (both are required) for pretty cheap used. The pricewatch price isn't bad either (Samsung I believe it is).

SL6RZ was the s-code on mine.

these are mostly doing 3ghz aircooled....so I might buy a cheaper proc to throw in the server

Tweakmeister, I tried just about everything I could. Onboard NIC off, USB off, everything that wasnt essential off. Tried it in 32 bit and 64 bit slot. There is also nothing else in the machine. Just clean insall of 2000 with SP3 and then trying to install the card. I spoke with a friend of mine who is a developer in the NT Kernal group at MS and he said it is the driver. So, when I get some time I guess I'll call Linksys back and argue with them for a while Actually I personally dont even care if the damn thing works its for my roommate Ill just take that card back and get a USB wireless card. But it would be nice to have the 54Mbps and also save someone else this headache...

Anyone install an IDE RAID card in the 600SC? According to the docs you can only install a RAID card in slot 2 which is one of the 64bit slots.

EDIT: After reading the docs again it looks like you only need to install an IDE controller card in slot 2 if you are using it to boot from. Since I want to use the 80gb drives as RAID mirrored data storage I should be able to use a regular 32bit IDE controller in PCI slot 1 and boot from a 3rd HD using the onboard IDE connections.

Tentative plan if this thing ever gets here:

Pull out the 2.4GHz P4, put it in a gaming machine.

Buy a cheap 1.7 Ghz Celeron Put it in the 600SC

(for a file server should be plenty of HP).

So 600C experts:

Any issue with:

a. removing the CPU
b. Is there a fan on the CPU Heat sink or is it a passive heat sink?
c. If there is a fan, does it use a standard power connector or is it something proprietary to DELL?

D: I've been out of the INTEL scene for quite a while. Any suggestions on a good MB? Or does everything out right now suck monkey-but and wait for Springdale, esp if using Gig ether??????????

Thanks!!!!!!!

CiSmAXz - yeah then I guess the only choice is to wait for drivers or go with something else. You could always blaim it on a freak ESD thing (happens more often than people think )

Lanyap - I'm using a FastTrak133 TX2 in the 32-bit slot. Working like a charm. I personally prefer to keep my raid drives just for files...

trikster2 - When you pull the heatsink the goop suction is so great you'll probably pull the chip outta the socket with it haha (doh!). Ah well..my chip was fine. I'm thinking along the same lines about going with an Abit BH7 for the 2.4 (seems like a waste to not overclock it, doesn't it?!?) I'd just use the original system heatsink with the new server chip...it has a fan and works well (there's a huge fan above the heatsink too).

Thanks to da Tweak

Looking at the BE7-G, looks like it has most of the features of the BH7, but for only $30 or $40 more you get built in gig ethernet.

Only thing is: It'a broadcom chip, isn't Intel suposed to be better?

So the question is: Built in broadcom or the BH7 with a $40 intel adapter?

I will go for BH7 for Intel chipset to be on the safe side.

I was comparing with Abit BH7 v1.1 and Abit IT7-MAX2 v2.0. I didn't see much difference in the feature but huge price difference. Seems like BH7 is a way to go. If you got a good step on your CPU and good memory chips, you can OC it to 3.3GHz easyily.

Isn't the Gigabyte BEG-7 just the BH7 with gigabyte ethernet???? Wouldn't it still be the safe side?

Oops, you are right. I mixes it up. I was reading your previous message and got mixes up with broadcom chip and Intel chip. You are talking about NIC chip not the chipset. My bad.

Since you brought it up, I might take closer look at BEG-7 and BH7 myself. I might hold on the purchase and do more research. Thank you for providing an alternative choice.
