Well, I could not resist, time to retire my dual PIII 450/133 server box. The article referred to above says that the FSB is 400. This is not the case. The specs can be viewed at Link. Bummer about the sound. Since all the PCI slots are 3.3v slots, not 5v slots, the older cards will not fit / work. You need to find a 3.3v sound card, or, don't use it for sound. This is really a server box. This is why there is no AGP in the box. I did a quick look for 3.3v sound cards and the only reference I could find is the Aureal Vortex. I tried to go to their site and it looks like they are no longer in business. So, if you really want sound, you will have to look hard for a sound card! Again, this is a server box, not a gamer box.

Good luck!

EDIT: Okay, after looking at my MB and the 3.3v PCI slot, I was able to look at sound cards and determine which are 3.3v and which are not. It looks like the new cards are all 3.3v. I checked out NewEgg and they have one on sale right not for $33.00 (Link). I took a look at all my old SB Live boards and none of them are 3.3v. So, it looks like you can get a Dolby Digital 5.1 sound card for $33.00...by the way, the shipping is free!

No you can't... this uses ECC DDR... Though, with that said, you can get a 256meg chip directly from Dell S&P for $54 (After 15% off Dell Peripherals discounts going on right now) or a 512 stick for $142. Jugs EDIT: Just found a stick of Kingston 512meg PC2100 ECC for $79 at googlegear.com Link Or Kinston 512meg PC2700 for $89 link

I just checked out the link. The memory in this link will not work. This needs to be DDR Registered ECC. The following link is the correct memory, it is $87.00.

Are you sure that's the right one? I did a search and there seems to be a couple Kingston 512MB DDR266 PC2100 memory sticks on the site.

There is the one you linked to for $86, Kingston 512MB DDR266 PC2100 ECC Registered Double-Row Memory Retail and one more for $112, Kingston 512MB DDR266 PC2100 ECC Registered Memory Retail. Will the dell motherboards support Double Row ram?

How can you tell if your sound card is 3.3v or 5v? I ordered one of these but now I am having serious doubts... may have to cancel order.

For those interested in taking advantage of the gig ethernet.

Cost of doing Gigabit home networkin is pretty cheap:

You can get a hawking 4 port gig switch for $95 or an 8 port for $180

Intel gig cards can be had for $44 shipped.

So for under $200 you can double or tripple network throughput.

Perfect if you got the 600C to use as a file server like I did........

March is historically the time of year Dell makes these server deals the most enticing. I got a 500SC last Feb/March for $250. Sold it since then, but I can't help but eye this one!

Finaly got a ship date but it is estimated to be 26 March.

Seems kinda long nearly 3 weeks?

As there may be better deals from what newphatdaddy said, I can cancel the order any time before the ship date right?

The 3.3v cards have a "slot" after the 10th trace from the bracket connecter side of the edge connector. Did that make sense? Look at the link above to the soundblaster card, click on "see it". You will notice that after the 10th trace on the edge connector there is a "slot" in the card. The 3.3v cards will have this, the 5v cards will not.

Hope that helps!

Another option for audio on the 600SC is USB audio. I picked up the Sonica from M-Audio.
Link. It works fine on my 600SC with W2k Advanced Server. Fine for playing MP3s, but not for heavy gaming. But then again, who buys a server for heavy gaming?

Haha... i'm looking at buying a cheap system for my mom to use at home, but that would be fast enough for her to use for many... many years. Any qualms about just getting this guy? Is it louder than an average Dell desktop?

I've been happy with it so far. The case is well-built, roomy, with plenty of cooling. All the fans make it a little louder than the average desktop, but not enough to annoy me. I have the IDE config (no raid controller card), and one nice thing is it supports up to six IDE devices. I have three hard drives in it now, plus CD and CDRW. My wife uses it for wordprocessing, surfing, etc., but most of the time it just sits there serving up files.

I paid $304 after rebate back in Oct. for a 1.7GHZ Celly, so my only regret is not waiting around for this deal. The other pain is the 3.3 volt / 64 bit PCI slots on the MB. None of my leftover PCI cards can be used in it, so consider that. All in all, it's a great deal for the price, as long as the extra noise and PCI restrictions aren't a factor.

The noise is a big deal... i think I may just wait around for a deal on a Dell desktop and go with that.

Does anyone think it worth the extra $100 for the U160 SCSI controller and 36GB 10K RPM drive? Its $200 more for the controller and a 18GB 15K RPM drive. I still goofing around with various configurations.

I think I am going to cancel my order tomorrow morning. With all the extra components I have around I decided to just pick up an Asus P4PE and P4 2.4GHz 533Mhz chip. That came out to about $300 and I already have the rest to build a machine. Its technically the same speed as the 600SC I was going to get, but with all the extras on the board and ease of upgrades (no ECC costs, 64-bit slot issues, missing AGP, etc.) it seems like a better for deal for me. Obviously not everyone has a bunch of extra components lying around, but I know quite a few people do and its something to think about considering all the minor caveats inherent in the 600SC. However, if someone is looking for a small, extremely stable server to sit in the closet, the 600SC can't be beat, price-wise.

I am thinking along the same lines, as I haven't ordered yet. The wife gave the go ahead on buying this server, but I don't see why spending $300 on components would be any different.

Yep, very loud but also look at how cheap it is.

Either get this cheap LOUD PC or pay about $300 more and get a quieter Dell Dimension 4550 (w/ AGP) which is almost whisper quiet BUT it is $300 more.

I figure I'll just wait and talk to David and see if he can get me a good deal.

I'm sitting here in my 10x10 room with 4 PCs running, and the only one I hear (without my headphones) is my 600SC. It is louder than normal, but if ya need a server, it's an awesome deal. If you don't need a server, I'd suggest looking for a different deal.

I don't know for sure, but I have a Madddog Predator (5.1) sitting in my unused peripheral pile, and it won't work. It has to have a notch close to the back of the card. If it only has one notch toward the front, you're sol.

It looks like the last stick is not registered ECC.

The infineon deal looks sweet though - they are made by Siemens and these guys make good memory.

When this deal was on a couple of weeks ago it was even sweeter (free second HDD and 50% off raid card) also 15% coupon around and $100 MIR. I got a 2.4GHz 600sc 2x120GB RAID 1 for $604 shipped. It should arrive tomorrow (they were a little slow with the shipping).

OK enough bragging, back then I tried to collect a little more information about the memory in this thread, please post there, it may help to consolidate that information.

Got in on this one.... this will make a GREAT file server for $270...... Now just need to up the memory....

Im thinking of putting W2K Server on it..... What do you think the minimum amount of ram would be to make this system run just as a file server?

Thanks!

256 should do the job but 512 to 1GB is probably better.
