The 2nd and 3rd links see to be 168 pin DIMMs. Will those work? I researched Banana PC, and found a number of deals:

BananaPC, 266, 32x8, CL2, Infineon - $76
BananaPC, 266, 64x4 "6LY", CL2, Infineon - $79
BananaPC, 333, 32x8, CL2.5, Infineon - $78
BanaPC, 333, 32x8, CL2.5, Samsung - $82

All are claimed to be 184-Pin, 512MB, ECC, REG. Surprisingly, the first 2 are CL2! Is there any thing to be gained from the DDR 333s except that they are perhaps more reliable at 266? Recommendations?

Just to complete the story: I got into the 600SC deal at $270 w/128MB, and am looking for memory to setup a Linux/Solaris development m/c and file server.

On the second line the 168 pin package type must be a misprint. I don't think there is such a thing as 168 pin DDR. Since everything else referrs to DDR I do think it's a misprint rather than a misadvertised sdram stick - we'll see I ordered two...

On the third line it states that it is PC133 SDRAM

SB Audigy (includes firewire as well) has the proper PCI connections for this server.

Looked at some pictures of the products at Newegg and found the following:
Guillemot Hercules Fortissimo III 7.1 - $48 shipped
Soundblaster Live 5.1 - $33 shipped

I'm just looking for the PCI cards with two notches in the connector instead of one to determine if they will work. You may want to do further research on each of the above before buying one.

You do not need a 64bit sound card (I don't even think anyone makes one!) You just need 3.3v. From looking on-line, it looks like all the new cards support 3.3v, thus, take a look at the card you want to purchase and look for the 3.3v slot.

Man...I'm SO going to get this and replace my current Linux server. I have a 64-bit PCI SCSI controller card in my current box that's sitting in a 32-bit slot...I'll finally have it where it should be. Bad news is that they charge tax, raising this another $20 or so for me, but, still, $290 for this thing is incredible.

EDIT: With the PCI issues everyone is talking about - I need to use this server as a router, meaning I'll be adding a NIC in for the extra port. I take it I can't just drop in a regular D-Link/Linksys/etc. NIC? Or is this not as much of an issue as with the sound cards?

I bought one of those 600SC about a month ago.

I wasn't aware of any problems with the soundcard. At the time CompUSA had some deal on a Hercules Fortissimo. I bought it because it was one of the chepaest ones I found. Stuck it in, installed the drivers, worked like a charm. So I don't know what the problem is with the PCI slots and soundcards on this board... I had no problems whatsover.

One thing to keep in mind: this is a server, just something to consider...

Has anyone found a video card that will work with this that is better than the Radeon 7000?

SpideyCU, the server has onboard LAN, gigabit too if I'm not mistaken. Do you need the extra card for sharing an internet connection?

SpideyCU, the Netgear FA311 is a 3.3v card and they come about as cheap as any other card.

Ok, I am still undecided about canceling this order or not. Couple of questions...

1) Has anyone gotten a sound card working in this machine?

2)Can I put a 32bit card in a 64 bit slot? The reason I ask is if I use the 32bit slot for a sound card are the rest of the slots useless? I need to put a wireless PCI NIC card in this machine also.

1. Yes. Dell Forum thread on soundcards.

2. 32 bit cards will work, but they must be of the 3.3v variety (have two notches in the interface rather than just the one seen on many cards

looks like everyone has been saying about getting this as a file server at home. What exactly does a file server do at home? Is it really necessary to have a server at home? Or is it just an excuse to jump on a too-hot-to-resist Dell deal?

Does anyone knows if the case can be used with a regular ATX motherboard? Or do you have to use it with a Dell's board only?
Thanks.

Thanks.

Right offhand I can not see why not. The case has 7 expansion slots in the back so it should fit a 1 AGP/6 PCI slot motherboard. The only issue I could think of would be maybe the mounting posts on the case and the power supply being proprietary.

Hey I have a few question for you guys who bought a few of these servers.
I am thinking of getting 4 of these so that I can put one computer in every room in my newly build house.
Do I need to submitt different order, for each of them ?? or just order all 4 at once ??
I cannot get this information anywhere in the rebate form except you can use the rebates for 5 servers.
Any more info on this servers ??

I'll bite:

I want a files server at home to:

consolidate files I have spread across 4 PCs.
consolidate future storage purchases into one box.

I'll bite 2:

* Keep important data in a centrallized location.
* Wont have to worry about data on my gaming rig (except for saved games) when I tweak the FSB and cause XP not to boot!!!
* Reduce the temps in my gaming rig which is OC'd by moving HD's to file server since I was using them as archive storage.
* Plus...yes....just too good a deal to pass up for a stable P4 2.4 533 system!

Here I was thinking I was going to pass on this server and Dell sends me a 10% off coupon in my email about 15 minutes ago. It works with the $110 off, but I had to remove the 5% off coupon to get it to work so I can get $110 off, 10% off, and $100 rebate. I am seriously looking at the 600SC with the U160 SCSI, 36GB SCSI drive for $373 after tax and rebate.

I got one too also. Grrr, why does Dell have to tempt me so?
