trik -

I wouldn't worry too much about the dell hsf having to be with the 2.4 for warranty reasons. You can seperate them...it's highly doubtful it the goop would play a role in warranty claims.

As for them coming out in one piece....it suprised me! No damage though. I think it's best to let the system cool down and the goop to firm up before yanking it apart.

I won't be ordering a BH7 just yet...have some other things to take care of. But in a few weeks I'll pick one up and tweak this thing.

Hey guys what about putting a fan out of a 4550 it looks like the pins are the same. I wish I still had my 4550 to try this.

ANy one out there with a 4550 and the 600sc can give this a shot?

I just received my server and it's nice for the $ but it's loud. I'd planned on replacing the heatsink/fan with a Zalman solution but the Pentium Retention Modules attached to the motherboard are specific to their unique heatsink/fan. Where can I acquire the more familiar Pentium Retention Modules so the common heatsink clips on heatsinks, like Zalman, can latch on to?

Just got mine today.

Dell tracking is useless.

According to the shipper they got it on the 20th. However dells web site this second still lists the status as:

Status: In Transit To Local Carrier .

Came Fedex not UPS so that explains why the "track by reference" on the UPS site did not work!

Got it out of the box and burning Redhat to load on it as I type this.

My first impression taking it out of the box and never having seen a 600SC in real life:

WOW.

I agree - my Dell tracking says it's on its way - but I have it.

Very nice unit for the price. Loud? Well, it's not quiet, but it is not as loud as I thought it would be given all the comments. You CAN forget it is there if you get busy.

All set up, threw in the 120gb drives from Staples, and am waiting on 512mb more of memory.

When all is said and done, I have a P4-2.4Ghz server with 640mb memory, and 280 gb of storage for UNDER $500. Not bad.

(Ok, for accountants: $290 for the server, $60 each for two 120gb drives, $79 for 512mb memory)

Thank god my order is delayed til the 31st. Gonna cancel and order the 4550 instead. For the extra $ I wont have to worry about the video/sound headache, plus get a faster processor (2.53) bigger hard drive (60 gig) and a copy of xp home. Finally, Dell's backlog is paying off.

I am anxiously awaiting my SC600 which should arrive by Friday

Anyone who bought non-Dell ECC RAM for this care to comment on the results? I've read through the thread and I'm still not sure which to go with. I want a 512 MB stick.

Thanks.

I played it safe and got a stick from crucial. Main reason was that I did not want to have to fight with someone for an RMA or exchange in case it didn't work. I know crucial is pricey, but I like their return/exchange policy.

Was funny when I put the stick in and it would not boot, told me that they had to be inserted according to size. I never dealt with Registered ECC RAM, so it came as a surprise to me.

Inserted by size? Say more - I have the 79 dollar 512mb stick coming in Friday, do I move the 128mb chip down the stack?

I'm really not understanding how people can complain this is loud. This box plus my Dimenson XPS-T 450 (P3 450) combined are software than my single Athlon 1.4 system. Sheesh, people these days. Complain about the tiniest thing. I have some rackmount systems that would make these same people break out in hives.

AFAIK, you do not need to insert the memory by size. You don't need to be scared of ECC Reg'd memory -- it's not going to bite you. It's the same as regular memory, except it's more reliable (error correcting) and slightly more expensive.

Inserted according to size meaning:

I had a 128MB and put a 512MB into the free slot. Would not boot, told me to put the 512MB in slot one and move the 128MB to slot two.

As I said, was surprised but lack the experience with ECC Registered RAM. Either that or is it serverworks specific. Minor thing though. I never close the cover until I know the thing boots up.

I've used Tyan and Asus dual athlon boards running AMD chipsets and Intel boards using E7501 chipsets and never had to do that :| Might be GC LE specific :/

You can still get a good deal from Staples on the Maxtor 120gb drive - use 30/150 coupon, and get 40 rebate till 3/29.

Check out the thread on it. I got two.

azev - just try pricewatch.com

regarding the noise. yes, it is louder than some computers...but certainly not the loudest I've heard. In fact, my main system has dual 10k rpm SCSI U160 drives and these babies are much more annoying than the server.

Should the Fan speed vary with the temp?
my was just running at full speed, so I took the back fan out with out any problems so far running 24/7 for the last few days.

If the fan should slow down with low temp I will put the fan back if that is possible.

There are no such things as too much memory or too much disk space. You can never have enough.
I have 800GB of storage space scattered all over my network in my house and I still dont have enough

Help on gettting 64bit IDE raid controller please.... I am going to raid 0 4 IDE drives (when I found a good deal), and I want the fastest controller for this setup. Either LSI, 3WARE, Promise SX4000. I am leaning towards SX4000 because of the 256MB cache.

Btw do you thing the power supply on this thing will be enough to power the server + 4 hardrive + 1GB Memory ??

To add to Walliser's comment.

The $79 512mb chipset from z-buy does work well in this machine. But to use it, take OUT the 128mb chipset, put the 512mb stick in place of where the 128mb stick was, then place the 128mb in slot 2.

Works great - 640mb is now in this machine for only an extra $79.

Go with the 3Ware. I run the 3Ware Escalade stuff (in its various forms) in my servers. It's definately good stuff.

If you are trying to decide what OS to put on this beastlet here's a data point for you:

Installed Redhat 8.0 on the 600SC and so far everything has worked perfectly.

It's a little slower than I would like when launching applications. I am not sure if that is because of the 128MB of ram or the on-board IDE controller which has been reviewed as kinda pokey.

Has anyon installed the drivers that come on a CDROM with the 600SC. It says they are optimized for your server but it looks like they were made for Redhat 7, so I am leary of using them for Redhat 8........
