I like this machine a lot. Thanks to all for the info posted. I installed XP Pro in the second disk partition; intel NIC drivers (from floppy).
I ordered the $9 Aureal 4-channel soundcard from Ateck. shipped this afternoon - pleasant enough shopping with them.
Keyboard is fine; mouse replaced with optical with scroll wheel.
Now for memory. Do you think it makes sense to use the PC2700 512 Samsung stick from www.z-buy.com at $82.50? -- that is only $4.50 than the price listed today for the PC2100 stick. I am assuming it would be compatible with the mb and the 128 it came with, and might be usable with a successor computer or mb.

I ordered the pc2100 512 stick and a 120GB WD HD from them...... wish newegg had more of this mem in stock..... I dont like not being able to check order status.....

Going with the same logic: I ordered the Samsung PC2700 512 from knowledgemicro.com last week for $80.50 including UPS ground. You have to use the link through pricewatch to get this price (I had to e-mail them later to give me the pricewatch listed shipping discount). Its still on its way - I'll post how it works in my 600SC with the OEM 128 when it gets here. Another note: they ship from CA, and UPS ground is painfully slow if you're on the East coast.

Got ours today... this thing is super quiet compared to our other Poweredge servers. Matter of fact, it's quieter than most home built systems.

Anyway, great machine for $389 shipped (I got the $70 80gig double storage free)...

I have no clue how people can say this machine is loud. It's probably the quietest server I've ever heard.

I ordered the $80 Micron ram from Z-Buy.com. I ordered on friday, was shipped on monday, and is currently "on truck for delivery" according to FedEd That's as fast a turn around as I could hope for, so I'm happy with them so far.

Exactly what I was thinking... obviously these people have not heard a "real" server before... We have a few large Poweredge and Compaq Prolient servers that are LOUD! This thing is whisper quiet in comparison.

RH 8.0 installed like a charm.

RH 9.0 crashes before I can even get to the main graphical install screen.

Could be my CDR media, Imation sucks!

Guys this thing is loud as hel* when compared to the 4550.
Could you guys tell me if the back fan should function at different speeds dipending on temp? my just ran at full blast all the time so I took the big fan out. Is there a way to put a 4550 fan in there?

I have supermicro hot swappable rack with 4 15k drives I wanted to trow in there, but before I do I want to make sure that it is ok to do so. Btw I will have 1 full length dell perc card, and 1 intel gigabit/fiber nic.

Point SEBZX79 is trying to make is that contrary to what is being said by some here, this thing is quite loud.

I have to agree. It is very loud.

But of course having looked at all the picts/reviews I assumed that the system was loud when I purchased it.

After it's configured it goes under the fish tank and get's managed remotely using X windows or VNC.

It was the imation media. reburned disk one with fuji

Just wanted to know if anyone has gotten ide raid working. Which cards will work and in which slot (s). Speed is not as important as a Raid 1 set-up that is stable.
