The cheap set is heat treated carbon steel - the 49.99 set is alloy steel. That's the price difference.

This is a terrible deal because HF's products are pure junk. I'd be surprised if taps don't break off in the hole or the dies threads don't go dull after 1 use. (most of this crap comes from China with zero quality control).

Carbon steel is what I'd call alloy steel, although maybe it isn't technically. I guess an alloy steel would have another element in there besides iron, like manganese or titanium. High carbon steel if properly tempered makes very good tools. Obviously, the quality of the steel has everything to do with how these perform over time and if they break.

That dremel tool is enticing if only for the accessories. I have a dremel tool and found out about it in this forum a few months ago - Black and Decker for $25 at Home Depot, but it didn't come with much in the way of accessories. Expensive shipping is prohibitive, though. There are around 20 stores in CA but I don't think I'm within 25 miles of any.

Here are the taps we use, Emuge Taps, they are great quality, we have run tests where these taps will produce in excess of 2500 holes each in forged aircraft aluminum.

Pretty pricey though, about $50.00 each for the smaller ones and you can get you favorite coating, we perfer TiAlN.

P.S. As far as these things go, only put them in a hole you don't care if the tap breaks ;(
