What brands should I be looking at in the $600 pricerange if I need a new PC and monitor? I'd like something with a PCI-express x16 slot, and I don't care if it comes with a videocard because I'd rather buy my own down the line. I'd especially appreciate links to specific sales.

Need to be a little more specific. Are you looking to buy a prebuilt system and a monitor, or are you looking to build something? And if you want to build it, do you need the keyboard/mouse/OS?

If you want prebuilt, try and get your hands on an Athlon 64 computer with the ATi Xpress 200 chipset. That'll have somewhat decent integrated video, Socket 939, PCI-Express, and SATA. You can get a nice HP for about $400 something. Add a 17"/19" LCD, and you'll be good. Building your own is usually the better choice though. I recommend that.

Compusa had a Compaq sr1710nx on sale for $199 a week ago.

HP and Compaq make a whole series of computers based on the same socket939 motherboard, made by Asus. It has a pciexpress slot and can use most any socket939 processor, including dualcores.

I have one, the Compaq sr1630nx, and it's a very nice computer.

Although I'd prefer to build my own, I'm looking for a prebuilt simply because I don't think I can build one with an OS and monitor for 600 bucks.

Here you go:

Case/psu (my friends got one of these, PSU runs decent)

Hard Drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16822144182

Mobo with PCI-E and onboard video
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16822144182

CPU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819103537

Ram (I used to use this. Even ran at DDR 440!)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820145480

There you go. A fairly decent computer with all your requirements met for less than $400. Total comes to $385. Add in windows and it'll be around $600. Still better than anything prebuilt could ever get you.

Your supposed motherboard is actually linked to that hard drive you posted
But then again, I'd like to see it, as well, since I'm also looking to buy a similar computer.

There are many other parts involved, but these are just parts that I pointed out. This will also be the outline of my system specs. You still need RAM, HDD, optical drives, network card, etc, which'll probably boost up the cost to around $750. If you can't afford a computer that's higher than $600, my full recommendation is for you to wait, since prebuilts are not the best gamers, and mostly come preloaded with crap.

Compaq Presario SR1601NX from micro center for 250 after rebate (50 rebate) also optional free all in one epson printer but another 80 in rebates if you go w/ that

add 1 gb of memory for around $70 from you fave online retailer

add a PCI-E video card when you are ready to game and you have the balance to spend on a monitor this comes w/ everything you need and is a socket 939 very upgradable system

Wow, I didn't realize I could build at this price. All I'd need would be a keyboard and mouse, and if I could possibly find an old CRT monitor in town somewhere, it'd be even cheaper. Is it safe to assume you'd all reccomend a custom build, then?

If you want a laptop, you can get a Core Duo equipped Dell E1505 with 1GB RAM for $699 after a $300 off instant coupon. If you are interested, go on a search engine and look up the coupon code. It expires on 4/5
