that's pretty cheap for 5$ (yes I know it's a typo). Supposedly there's a rumor that the plan is 45$ for a 1.5-3 Mbps OR the plan is 50$ for dynamic IPs with 6Mbps speeds. But those are just rumors and won't be known until after 2/2.

To the guy who asked about download limits, I have never seen a dsl company cap dl limits but I've heard that the trend is growing in cable companies (look at the Comcast forums in dslreports).

Can't wait till Monday!

UPDATE:

According to one of the DSL reps from SBC in dslreports forums, it seems there is a 1.5-3Mbps/384 plan for 45$. BUT, it is secretly 1.5-6Mbps/384-608 if you're within range of their CO or RT so you if you go for that plan it's actually a 6Mbps plan if you qualify for 45$.

OK, now to work thru the marketing stuff.

The 1.5-3/384 is a marketing tier, not a speed tier. If you order it, it will actually be the 1.5-6/384-608 like the Expert is currently.

Once again, the 1.5-3/384 is actually 1.5-6/608!!

Existing customers CAN call in and get the new price!! It's just not advertised.

This is the same speed plan that DSLExtreme and Sonic is offering, just under a different name.

I thought this was a hot deal and was stoked to switch over my DSL. When I called this morning, the CSR informed me that while I qualified last week for the "Enhanced" package, I don't qualify this week for the "Expert" package. Apparently with the price change there was also a distance change. My 9000 feet was good enough last week, but for the new promotion you must be within 7500 feet.

SBC is really slick. I gotta give em a hand for being a slick bunch of %*#@$s.

I just made the switch to the new plan. For people in Cali, call this # 800-579-7861 if you're a existing SBC dsl customer. If you call any other # you will be playing phone tag.

This actually has nothing to do with SBC being "slick". The distance requirements are part of the DSL spec. The distance between you and the CO is the major factor in what speeds you can get. Even if they let you upgrade to the expert package, you wouldn't be able to reliably achieve those speeds. They are saving you and them the trouble of having you complain to them later about paying for a service that you aren't getting.

Yea, you could try asking them if they are gonna install any Remote terminals in your area in the near future.

Darn I wish I didn't sign up with DSL extreme for the plan. I should've stuck with SBC since the 45$ deal sure is killer for 6Mbps/608 speeds (if you're within CO/RT distance). That particular price won't change after your 1 year contract is up.

hehe oh well might as well look on the bright side

15$ more for unlimited newsgroups (2x256kbps) and static IP with no threat of a speed cap to 3Mbps in the near future (until FTTH gets deployed).

Apparently my first post was unclear. When I called last week, I was told I was eligible for the 1.5-6.0 speeds at my distance of 9000 feet. The CSR was ready to sign me up! I told her I wanted to wait until February because I heard "through the grapevine" that the prices were going to drop.

When I called yesterday the CSR said "Yes, the prices have dropped, but we have changed our packages around. The requirements for the Expert Plus package is that you must be within 7500 feet."

My point is that they have changed their requirements. This has nothing to do with "DSL spec", and they certainly aren't going to install a fiber relay so close to a CO. It just means that I'll have to go out and switch pairs and/or remove some bridge tap to get to the 7500 foot restriction. The change in their policy is most likely to reduce the number of people who will qualify for the higher speeds.

even if you do qualify at 9000 feet, you will be getting 1.5mbs and not 6.0mbs, why don't u try using cable? roadrunner or adelphia?

Alas, there is no cable in Chico, CA yet. There is a wireless service provider, but they limit your usage to a couple gigs/month. The real reason I am getting the Expert package is for the UPLOAD!

UPDATE: If you did order the DSL package. Some of the lines are active as of Wednesday, 2/4/04. I hooked up the modem and was able to get all 4 green status lights.

Cruising at 4120/512 speeds! Hope it starts ramping up.
