600m vs. Lifebook S6000

I have Fujitsu N5010..it is a 16in screen laptop..I agree a full size keyboard would have been better..placement of the speakers was stupid...but that said the keyboard feels fine..ie the actually keystroke.

It would be hard to judge based on a display model which are often abused

I'd look into the Toshiba Tecra M2. I just ordered one for myself.

For a little less than 1500, I got this:

Well, you have to actually configure it on their website, instead of just buying a preconfigured model that comes with the 32MB card.

I don't know off the top of my head. What I said was that the 600m is the only Inspiron with a magnesium alloy case; I was trying to convey that it's in a different build class from some of the other Inspirons. The 8600, for example, is reported to have a weak plastic case-- it supposedly flexes a little, like other heavy Inspirons have in the past.


4200 rpm hdd...

I'm pretty sure that you can also order a 5400 RPM drive, although definitely not a 7200 RPM one. I've noticed lots of 600m owners upgrading to 60GB 7200 RPM drives on their own, but of course that's an extra expense. (Incidentally, drive choice is another reason to've ordered the Fujitsu-- third-party resellers like www.portableone.com will do upgrades before they ship your new laptop, at reasonable prices.)

Nope, it won't. You must be repeating what you heard from another Dell hater! In reality, it's not the underside but the top of the case under one palm that gets slightly, but not uncomfortably, warm from extended use of the hard drive. Ask anyone that owns one.

I like Fujitsu a lot myself. In my opinion, the S6220 would be the laptop to buy, no contest, if it just had a decent dedciated graphics card. I'm holding out until next year, which will bring goodies like dual-core processors and upgradable graphics to the laptop-toting masses. Then I'll buy the successor to the S6000, whatever that may be, with a decent graphics card. I can't wait...

I'm surprised, incidentally, that there aren't more laptops offering a 13.3" screen size. It's really an awesome size for XGA, just big enough to be comfortable and allow for a nice-sized keyboard.
