Same here. D740X-6L (model# 6L060J3....ATA133, 7200, Quiet Drive Technology). Cheapest on Pricewatch is $87!

Specs
Taken from spec sheet...** The letter "J" contained in the model number denotes that this drive was manufactured in Japan with Ball Bearing Motor. (In case anyone is wondering)

Hot deal.

I've got this one Kit: L06J060G. It says J6L3 vertically on the label also. Is this a D740X?

Thanks to Gaard for clearing up Maxtor codes. J6L3= Ball Bearing, L6L3= Fluid. [ Mine are BB ]

D740x-6L in Totowa, N.J. 11AM ( 1 hour after opening & they had plenty left).
!!Front of boxes that had ATA-133 sticker had 1 year warranty sticker and boxes without ATA-133 sticker said 3 year warranty (printed on box). I went with the 3 year warranty (maybe I should keep the box) and got 2 with D740x-6L inside. On the way to RAID!!
Website says nothing about warranties.
All boxes in the store had a white sticker on the side of the box that say Ultra ATA-133, KIT: L06J060G and J6L3 (maybe not) printed at a right angle.
Happy hunting.

The label on my box says the same thing. Get the actual model# off the sticker that's on the drive itself. Mine says MX6L060J3.

Is the rebate maxtor's or compusa's? If it's maxtor's, could we price match it at another store (like staples)?

Thanks, RD, I was wondering about that. Got one in my cart.

What a deal!
Wonder why the website says it's only ATA100? Oh well. Good luck.

to know whether it is a Liquid bearing drive vs ball bearing look for the 4 letter code...it will either L6L3 or J6L3...it is the first letter that denotes liquid vs ball bear...L=liquid....J=ball bearing

Nevermind, got this link to work rebate.
Isn't the online store considered a "store", so the rebate should be good ordering online too?

I picked up one today...it was a J6L3 denoting that it is a 740DX ball bearing ATA-133. I have one of each (fluid and BB) in the 80GB flavor and quite frankly can't tell the difference...both are very quiet drives so doesn't matter either way to me.

Re the 60GB today, great drive for the $. Over the last 6 years, I have had probably 20 or so different Maxtors...only one ever failed, so I am satified.

A note on the Western Digital drive(s) that have a $40 rebate. there are two
drive models that the rebate is good for. WD800BBRTL and WD800JBRTL.
the first one has 2MB of cache. the second 8MB. the price stickers on all their
drives were all over the place for the same drive. so although the sticker on the
8MB model said $169 I had them check both models at a register. both came up
at $139. the rebate is good for either model. so you'd might as well get the
8MB "special edition" model if they have it.

I got a JBL3 today as well. Has anyone gotten a LBL3?

Also, which is faster a 120GB 5400RPM or a 60GB 7200RPM drive? The 120GB has higher density while the 60GB has faster spindle speed.

Since I can get a 120GB at Fry's for $99, that ends up being a better deal. But I'd like to have a faster drive.

The rebate form says it's for a gift certificate but the store manager assured me that I would get $60 cash back. He also volunteered that they have "straightened out" the problems they were having with getting rebates issued to customers. So I asked him why it said "gift certificate" instead of cash if they had their problems staightened out. The only answer he had was a funny look on his face, lol.

The mail-in form for this says it is for a $60 gift card, not for a $60 manufacturer's rebate like the ad in the newspaper claimed. Doesn't look like it is a rebate from Maxtor either since it isn't listed under rebate promotions on the Maxtor site; I guess CompUSA might be considered the 'manufacturer' in this case though since they are selling it under their brand. I am pretty disgusted since "$60 CompUSA Gift Card after rebate" is really not the same as "$60 check that can be deposited at any bank after rebate".

The rebate form that came out with my receipt doesn't say anything about a gift card. I know the online form does. Can someone else look at their receipt form. Maybe I'm missing it.

The form printed out at the register says nothing about a gift card, and actually mentions that your "check" will arrive within 10 weeks......

Not certain whether the 120GB is a 3 platter or 4 platter drive, but know for sure the advertised 60GB is a 740DX drive is definitely a 40GB/platter design, the highest areal density that Maxtor currently offers, regardless of spindle speed. The answer to your question is that 60GB drive is faster.

FYI, with Maxtor drives, the last digit in the part number corresponds to the number of recording surfaces or sides. These drives are "L3", thus, 3 surfaces...60GB / 3 = 20GB per surface... 40GB platters.

>Also, which is faster a 120GB 5400RPM or a 60GB 7200RPM drive? The 120GB has higher density while the 60GB has faster spindle speed.

The main thing spinning the HD faster does is to decrease the time it takes to spin to the right spot on the initial seek/read. On commercial servers, where time is money, this can be a very big deal.

The max data rate feasible is governed by the bandwidth of the data separator, which is an expensive part of a HD. On consumer oriented drives they are probably the same on 7200/5400 drives, so the data rate used would be the same, resulting in lower density on the platter for the 7200. However spinning a drive faster makes the signal the head picks up stronger, improving signal to noise ratio, which should allow slightly lower, and therefore slightly denser, magnetic domains on the HD, without losing signal qualtity. But you would need a data separator with a higher bandwidth. On price-is-no-object SCSI drives, they use the best data separator they can obtain. That wouldn't make much sense on a $100 HD.
