Here

I had to go to the GeekSquad to get it, they had a bunch of them (~20). Tax makes it less appealing ($9 for me), but can't complain about a retail drive with a 5 year warranty for < $80 AMIR.

I started a thread at Fat Wallet about this one. There's something weird though because it's an OEM drive, says so on the drive itself, and warranty is currently listed as only through Jan 2007 at Seagate's site. I've emailed Seagate and will post their response when I get it.

Everything should be fine, but it's just odd -- model number inside is different from what's written on the box, also (same specs -- 5400rpm, 8MB, 12.5ms). Also, absolutely NOTHING inside the box except the drive so don't expect adapters, drivers, or anything like that. It's not a retail kit even though it's sold retail.

Oh, and the price is fantastic though -- someone posted at FW that the cheapest 60GB/8MB drive right now is $91. Seagate is also considered by more than a few to make the best laptop HDD right now.

Nice upgrade for 4200RPM owners. Plus its seagate (built like a Toyota camry)

Bigger is better, But, if 5400 verses 4200 = more current = shorter battery time, the swap would not be all good, camry or not.

BTW, how would you swap drives in a notebook? Specifically, dup the system and apps ? is there a way to tie in a second drive temporarily?

Many people say that swapping from 4200 to 7200 will not result in a significant lost in battery time, so I doubt 5400 will result in noticable shorter batter time.

When I swap the drives, I will probably do a fresh install of Windows XP on the new drive. I could use Acronis True Image to image and restore the OS partition, but it won't trouble me to just reinstall XP. It seems that the only way you can tie in a second drive temporarily is to use an external enclosure or an IDE to usb adapter for 3.5 drives.

You can buy an adapter for a few dollars that allows you to connect notebook drives to an IDE connection in a PC. You can buy two of those and make an exact copy of the drives using a PC.

If you don't have a PC, you could buy a program like Norton Ghost and make an exact copy of the drive.

Or, as someone else mentioned, you can buy a USB adapter for a notebook hard drive.

Newer drive are usually more efficient than the old.. my 7200 has similar battery life to my 5400 notebooks. I compared them side to side.

Has anyone scored the 7200 RPM version for the same price?

If you look at the Best Buy ad (online) and zoom in on the picture of the drive you will see that it is a picture of the 7200 RPM version.

I'd go ahead and get it if you want it. Someone ran into a problem like this before and had the warranty period reset by the manufacturer. If you're worried, just don't submit the rebate yet until the mystery is solved (ie., hold onto the UPC if you need to return it).

UPDATE!!

One response from Seagate so far is that the drive only has warranty listed (either 2007 or 2008 depending on what luck you have in buying the drive) and will not be extended by Seagate. The response I've received from Seagate was useless because it was generic ("all internal drives sold after June 1, 2004, carry 5 year warranty" -- since this is OEM drive, probably doesn't apply I'm guessing). One person already returned opened drive and was not charged a restocking fee by BB.

I'm going to call Seagate myself and ask about this then confront BB management if Seagate refuses to extend warranty. I'm planning on requesting BB extended warranty/replacement coverage for additional four years at their expense. Fraud doesn't come cheap, BB!

The drive I picked up last night showed warranty until jan 07 on seagates website. I called their support number and she said:
1 save your box for 5 years and they will honor the warranty
2 go back to Best Buy and tell them to exchange it for one that shows warranty for 5 years when you look it up

I have to send the upc off the box for the rebate, so I am sure the box will do me no good in 5 years when the drive fails
2 I called Best Buy and they said "call seagate back, it is their warranty, not ours"

I already installed it and it is quiet and real fast, I don't want to take it back, maybe I will just take my chances.

Did you put in the Part Number on the box or the one on the drive?

On the Box I get 1 year instead of 5.

If I use the Drive SN/PN I get 0 (ZERO) warranty. It says your warranty is with the seller. (Best Buy). YUCK! I'm off to frys to get a drive with a warranty.

Not everyone can afford to upgrade so often. A hard drive with 60GB can store a significant amount of data for years to come, and even if it is not attached to a notebook, it can be used as a portable storage. If it is being advertised with a five year warranty, somebody should at least honor it.

not gonna happen, since BB does not have a sku for a exdended warrenty on notebook drives. its seagates warrenty, not best buy. seagate also packages the drives. BB is simply a reseller.
